Wuxi has a population slightly in excess of 6.37 million, over half of whom live in the downtown urban areas. Males account for a population of 3,305,707 (51.87%) and females account for a population of 3,066,917 (48.13%). The city centre covers 1,622.64 km², but the entire area is around 4787.61km².
There are 43 small minority groups living in Wuxi, the largest of which are the Tujia, Hui, Zhuang and Bouyei, and all of them number over 1000 people.
