The population of Hohhot is a little over 2.87 million, with about 68.98% of the people living in urban areas. The male population of 1.46 million, making up 51.01% of the total resident population; the female population is 1.40 million, accounting for 48.99%. It is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Inner Mongolia, home to over 47 different ethnic groups, the largest of which is Han. Other ethnic groups in the city include Manchu, Hui, Tibetan and Dawoer, and only 10% of the population remains ethnically Mongolian.
