China’s film industry has just reached a new milestone: Django Unchained has been approved by the Chinese censors, making it Quentin Tarantino’s first ever film to receive a theatrical release in China. According to Zhang Miao, director of Sony Picture’s Chinese branch, the film got the green light because Tarantino “agreed on making slight adjustments to the film for different markets — and this adjustment for him is progress rather than a compromise”.
Violence and gore are trademark elements of Tarantino films and the Chinese version will still have all the typical blood splatter – albeit in a darker shade (he literally had to make the blood a shade darker to appease the censors) and at lower heights.
Django Unchained, which stars Leonardo DiCaprio, Jamie Foxx and Christoph Waltz, has already earned over $416 million globally since its release in December 2012. It will hit Chinese theaters from April 11.
