A Taste of Home: Top Non-Chinese Restaurants in Chengdu

A Taste of Home: Top Non-Chinese Restaurants in Chengdu
By Michael Webster , eChinacities.com

In the ten years since I first came to Chengdu, there have been many attempts at establishing the international food front. Numerous aspiring entrepreneurs have tried to open restaurants in Chengdu, only to see them dwindle and disappear. Recently, however, things seem to be changing; more and more non-Chinese restaurants are withstanding the many calamities that felled their predecessors. This gives those who live in Chengdu an increasingly wide range of international tastes and flavours with which to satiate our homesick taste-buds and take a break from Chinese food. Here is the best of the bunch, in no particular order:

Peter's Tex-Mex 彼得西餐 View In Map
Peter's is synonymous with the term, ‘western food’ in Chengdu. Popular with both Chinese and foreigners alike, the food is reasonably priced and the portions are ample. While the Mexican fare couldn't be called authentic, it definitely has best burritos and enchiladas in Chengdu.

Peterpan Italian Restaurant 彼得潘意大利餐厅 View In Map
A little bit off the beaten path, but with a lot of great outdoor space, Peterpan's is the most authentic Italian fare you will ever find in Chengdu. The owner, Claudio, has done everything possible to recreate the dishes of his Italian home-town. His pasta is excellent, and I would go as far as to say that his pizza is the only palatable pizza in Chengdu. He even grows all his own herbs out front, and you will see the chefs hurry out to pick some fresh basil just after you've made your order.

Le Sud南方法国餐厅 View In Map
Popular with many foreigners in Chengdu, this restaurant has achieved immense popularity simply by word of mouth. Located close to Hemp House, it easily goes unnoticed due to its unassuming décor, but they create authentic homely French dishes, which were previously impossible to taste in Chengdu. The prices are very reasonable and the portions are much bigger than you would expect at a French restaurant. The highlights of the menus include the Lamb and salmon dishes, and be sure not to miss the crème brulee.

Tandoor 坦道 View In Map
The Tandoor has been at the same location, nestled in at the back of the Sunjoy Inn on Renmin Nan Lu, for many years and has maintained consistently high standards. The waiters, managers, and cooks are from India and together they provide the best service and dining experiences that I have ever had in Chengdu. Sadly, the prices are not that easy on the wallet; it's pretty easy to run up a tab of 200-400 RMB for two people (with service charge), but I never regret a single Yuan spent there. The tandoori, whether it be chicken, lamb or beef, is always succulent and tender; the curries and vindaloos are a perfect blend of spice and flavour, and their naans are the perfect complement to their sauces.

El SultanView In Map
A great little Turkish restaurant in Yulin, and possibly the only place in Chengdu where you can enjoy Sheesha pipes. The hummus and kebabs are always good, and while their pita bread isn't authentically Turkish, it’s still great for soaking up the hummus. The menu is a bit limited, but I still find myself craving the hummus at least once a week.

Fiesta Thai非常泰泰国餐厅 View In Map
Fiesta Thai is the most popular Thai place in town and attracts a large foreign crowd. They have better red and green curry dishes than any other Thai place in town. Their Pad Thai is consistently well-received, although a little on the sweet side. The minced chicken salad is a must-try dish that will have you dreaming about its taste for days afterwards. They have a great roof-top area which is gloriously comfortable on Chengdu's non-sunny summer days.
