From September 26 to October 3, Beijing will be home to a range of innovation and design. Beijing Design Week has become an annual event. It promotes the cultural development of Beijing and its construction as a “national cultural center” as well as contributing to the Chinese capital’s application for the UNESCO title of “design capital”, which it earned in 2012.
The event will include seven main sections: opening ceremony, Beijing Design Awards, Beijing Design Fair, Theme Exhibitions, Beijing Design Forum, Guest City and Design Hop. Locations vary but a large number of events take place at 798 Art District. For a full list check out the official website below.
The people at We Impact are just one example of the type of design you will be able to see. The have constructed ‘The Flower of Life’ at 798. A symmetrical hexagon, which represents the ideal condition of life: infinite, with an array of 150 lightweight aluminum tents supported by 4-metre high rods through its centre. At the end of some of the erected rods, a string will suspend a lightweight plastic bowl. The bowls will be filled with various eco and sustainable products from local businesses. The weight that the bowls produce compresses onto the rods, causing them to bend in the form of a flower.
