South Koreans still see China as their most important international partner, according to a new survey by Japanese-based think tank Genron NPO. Despite rising tensions between the two countries because of recently announced plans for a U.S.-South Korea missile shield, 47.1% of South Koreans think China is the nation’s most important partner. This is 7% more than those who think the United States is most important.

65.9% of Japanese believe that the United States is Japan’s most important international partner. Only 8% think China is most important.

Genron NPO spokesperson Yasushi Kudo said that most Japanese people feel that South Korea and the United States are their most important allies.
