70 Million Chinese Live on 1 USD Per Day

Up to this day, China’s economic fame is complicated by heavy hearted statistics from its poor provinces: the country that is the world’s second largest economy has over 70 million people that live on just one USD per day.

The current picture of China’s poverty isn’t one of optimism, adequately detailed with descriptors such as “many,” “wide,” and “deep.” Of those 70 million people mentioned, nearly half of them were from Henan, Hunan, Guangxi, Sichuan, Guizhou, and Yunnan provinces.

Additionally, China still has 200,000 people who don’t use electricity and over 10 million countryside households that don’t have access to clean water. There are also 77 thousand villages documented as having no access to public transportation and 330,000 villages that lack hard-paved roads.

Since 1978 China has accomplished a great feat by lifting 700 million people out of poverty, but China still faces a major historic test as it works towards creating a healthy society for the rest of its poor people. Particularly frustrating is that former methods are not having the same effects they once did.

Experts believe that China’s efforts need to improve if they are to continue producing results. One of those experts has pointed out that a reasonable target for China’s efforts is to get those 70 million people above the poverty line and relieve them of basic worries for food, shelter, clothing.

Unfortunately this is the real China. Very different to what you see in all the advertisements with nice apartments and cars parked in the driveways. The thing is, I've been to some of the poorest parts of China, and that's where you find the nicest and most genuine people.
