On Saturday January 25, China’s premier tennis player won her first Australian Open title in Melbourne. Li beat Slovak Dominika Cibulkova in straight sets 7-6 (3) 6-0. In doing so Li became both the first Chinese player to win the tournament as well as the oldest woman, aged 31 and 334 days, ever to lift the Daphne Akhurst Memorial Cup

The victory gives Li her second Grand Slam trophy after she won the French Open in 2011. The check she picks up for her win is a whopping 14 million RMB. She also proceeded to win over the home crowd with a refreshingly funny victory speech where she thanked her coach for making her rich and poked fun at her husband. Expect Li to be an even bigger crowd favorite at next year’s tournament.
