5 Killed and 20 Injured in Explosion on Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway

At around 8:30 pm on March 19, a semi-truck exploded at the section of the G4 Beijing-Hong Kong-Macau Expressway in Gulun village in the Hunan province.

According to Hunan traffic police, the explosion caused five deaths and injured 20 more people, four of which sustained severe injuries.

According to a preliminary investigation, the accident was caused by a semi-truck carrying hazardous chemicals that caught fire. The fire spread to the truck’s gas tank and caused the explosion. Two cars and two trucks nearby also ignited and seven more vehicles were damaged.

According to the authorities, the driver of the truck, Zhao Sheng Hu, had no qualifications for the transportation of the hazardous chemicals.
