Two men, surnamed Lin and Wu, were recently hired by a county government in Fujian Province to properly dispose of pigs that had died prior to slaughter from infections diseases. Of course, this being China—land of zero accountability and get rich quick schemery—that’s not quite what happened.
Last August, Lin, apparently thinking “to hell with safety standards!”, started privately processing the diseased caresses he was supposed to destroy and selling the meat to neighboring provinces, such as Guangdong, Jiangxi and Hunan. As his income from black market pork sales continued to boom, Wu expanded his operation to include a number of rented warehouses.
By January 2013, Lin and Wu decided to work together, and within three months’ time managed to sell off nearly 40 tons of tainted meat, earning more than 3 million RMB in the process.
On March 15, the authorities apprehended three men (Lin, Wu and their truck driver), although three workers from Henan hired to do the illegal slaughtering managed to get away and are still at large. As of now, the case is still under investigation, and information regarding the transport of the diseased pork, and the specific locations where it was sold is still unclear.
