300 Million Smokers in China; No. 1 Worldwide

According to a recent international survey, there are more than 300 million smokers currently in China, earning it the non-celebratory distinction as the country with the most smokers worldwide. More than half of Chinese men smoke (52.9%), second only to Russia, however the total number of male Chinese smokers is by far the largest in the world (288.1 million). Additionally, even though the percentage is not very high (2.4%), the number of female Chinese smokers is also the largest in the world (12.6 million). The survey reported that one million Chinese die from tobacco-related diseases each year, and that second-hand smoke claims the lives of 100,000 each year, disproportionately affecting non-smoking women and children.

Hopefully the study about economic prosperity is true and this will start to shrink. (It might be a while...)
