2.2 Million Chinese Youths Die Annually Due to Indoor Pollution

The Consulting Center for Public Health Issues Concerning Chinese Youth, in affiliation with the Standardization Administration of China has published findings of research that stated that an average of 2.2 million youths die annually in China due to respiratory ailments caused by indoor pollution. Of the 2.2 million average, 1 million are toddlers aged 5-years and younger. Their research has found that air quality indoors for Chinese homes are 5-10 times worst than the quality of air outside; in fact, 4% of all researched global ailments are found to be related to/caused by indoor air pollution.

Major pollutants tainting the quality of air indoors are found to be formaldehyde, benzene, ammonia, and radon (Rn). Of the four, formaldehyde has been ranked as the number two toxin to watch out for on the list of controlled chemicals in China and has been confirmed by the WHO to be toxic and carcinogenic. Formaldehyde are usually found in home improvement materials and furniture, for example in plywood, particle board, foam fillers, wood flooring, wall papers and paint.
