10 Hottest Cities in China List Holds Some Surprises
Aug 04, 2010 By eChinacities.com

Recently, CCTV weather anchor Song Yingjie posted a blog entry entitled “We Are Not Forbidden to Report 40℃ Temperatures” – a policy some weather watchers have assumed exists. He also voiced his opinion that Fuzhou is the hottest city in China, and released his own ranking of China’s 10 hottest cities. The list may surprise you.

Song came to the conclusion that Fuzhou is China’s hottest city by scouring weather reports he had done for the last decade (2000-2009). He also ranked the top 10 hottest Chinese cities according to the total number of “hot” days (temperatures above 35℃) they had each year. Results show that each of the 10 cities had over 200 hot days in the last 10 years, with 5 cities having over 300 days with temperatures above 35℃.

The thermometer shows the temperature is 45℃ on the Wuyi Square in Fuzhou on July 4th this year

Fuzhou had a total of 375 hot days in the past decade, ranking first; next was Hangzhou with 355 hot days; then Chongqing with 343 hot days; Changsha was fourth with 326 hot days. Wuhan ranked fifth, with a total of 305 hot days during the past decade – an average of 30.5 each year. Ranking sixth through tenth were Haikou, Nanchang, Guangzhou, Xi'an and Nanning.

Wuhan has always been considered one of the four hottest cities in China. People may have different opinions about the other top three cities on the list, but Wuhan was always considered in the top four. However, Song’s article moves Wuhan down a notch.

With the exception of Xi’an, all the cities on the 10 list are located nearby the Yangtze River, to the south. It’s a surprise to many that northwestern Xi’an made it into the list as top 10 hot cities.
