Living far from home can be a godsend, or sometimes it can be hard. Here are some restaurants in Kunming to make it that little bit easier when you are missing the taste of home. Or just to mix it up and challenge your taste buds!

1) Prague Café
Offering a few different cuisines including Japanese and Western food, Prague café has a reputation for good coffee in the area, while remaining relatively local. A lot of Chinese people come here to eat, drink, hang out and study, but it is also a popular place for foreigners who are in Kunming studying Chinese to hang out. It is perfect for those who like to hang out in café’s with friends, or who like to study in places other than home or the library. There are two branches, one on Beichen Pedestrian Street, and another on Wenlinjie.

2) Cacao Mexican Restaurant
Cacao Mexican Restaurant offers Mexican food cooked by real Mexican chefs in a modern setting, and serves more than just your typical tex-mex burritos and tacos. There is obviously also fresh guacamole on the menu, and a great terrace to go perfectly with the refreshing margaritas. Perfect to start a night out with friends, or even for a weekday treat.

3) French Café
French Café is another great option for breads and pizzas in Kunming, and a great option for Yunnan coffee. The café also serves American-style coffee, English tea, and has a bunch of alcoholic options including tequila and imported beer. Some of the staff speaks a bit of English, and the café has a relaxed atmosphere, perfect for those who like to get some of their work done in a café, as there is also free Wi-Fi.

4) Slice of Heaven (天堂角西点咖啡)
This New Zealand-owned bakery-style café is perfect if you are craving simple but good Western food, or Western style desserts. There is indoor as well as outdoor seating. There are special pizza deals on Friday, when pizzas are half price, so a reservation may be needed.

5) O’Reilly’s
For pub food, try Irish pub O’Reilly’s, famous with Kunming expats for exactly this. Besides fish and chips, the drinks here are also great, and you can rely on a wide range of imported beers. Also a great place to go if you are just missing the pub atmosphere, or if you are looking for somewhere to watch the sports.

The food at Prague Cafe is SLOP, I would not even feed it to my dog.
