Housed in a former factory space in the Kunming Loft Art Community on Xiba Road, this top class space is much more than just an art gallery. It is an easy mistake to compare TCG Nordica (TCG诺地卡文化中心) with Beijing’s 798 art district because of its exterior industrial vibe. However, unlike the commercial explosion of the current 798, this space is more down-to-earth and seeks to creative opportunities for the wider community, as opposed to merely the elites of the art world. Featuring a stage, a cafe, art workshop spaces and guest flats, this venue is a dynamic, multi-functional “treasure box” for anyone interested in the arts. Set up in 2000 by Swedish cultural worker Anna Mellegard and Chinese businesswoman Wu Yuerong, TCG Nordica has been active in providing a cultural platform between China and Scandinavia, becoming one of Kunming’s main centres for cultural exchange and one of the liveliest, most vibrant exhibition venues in the city.

The venue’s objective is “Stimulating reflection on human worth as expressed in various art forms“. This goal is achieved through a wide spectrum of activities that continuously attract some of Scandinavia’s most talented artists, performers and musicians, as well as local residents, students, artists and intellectuals. Another aim of the venue is to promote a deeper understanding of multi-culturalism and its history. Apart from the international cultural and artistic exchanges it organises, TCG is also active in charity events and in raising awareness of pressing societal problems such as aids in China. Through close cooperation with the government, embassies and other organisations around China, TCG Nordica strives to give back to the community and country it has called home since over a decade.

TCG Gallery
The gallery covers a floor space of 500 square metres, with 7 metre high ceilings. An excellent, bright art space combined with the highest curating standards ensures a high standard of exhibitions. More than twenty artists live in the art compound of TCG Nordica which further adds to the charm and creative atmosphere of this space.

TCG Stage
The performance stage sees scores of performers from different backgrounds and genres take the stage here. The venue hosts events ranging from live music, classical concerts, dance and theatre, to poetry, film screenings and international film festivals.

Cafe
This increasingly popular cafe is perfect for enjoying a strong cup of freshly brewed coffee while nibbling on delicious Western pastries. The cafe has gained an excellent reputation for its innovative fusion of Western and Chinese dishes, set in a welcoming, creative atmosphere.

Also of interest are the workshops and language exchange programmes hosted by TCG Nordica. Various short and long-term courses are available in the centre, including courses in art, music, Chinese calligraphy, Chinese language and culture etc.
