It didn't take me long before I started to crave a really good, juicy burger. I tried asking for guidance from Chinese friends and they all pointed me towards the world-famous chains (McDonald’s, KFC, Burger King) scattered around Hangzhou. When I told them I wanted a GOOD burger, their faces were blank and so I embarked on a quest to find those fresh, thick beef patties served with quality ingredients, here in Hangzhou.
What to Expect
The secret to a good burger is to start with fresh meat; grill it to perfection and serve it with high quality vegetables and buns. Hangzhou surprisingly has eight locations that fit this bill, and include English speaking staff, easy to read menus and nice atmosphere's ranging from upscale restaurant to rustic hangout. Unless otherwise stated, they all include a fresh, ground beef patty, tomatoe, romaine lettuce, onion, dill pickle and mayonnaise, with the option of mustard. What's more, there’s free wifi internet at all of the venues. Burger types are divided into three categories: The Classic Burger, Specialty Burgers, and The Budget Burger.
Eudora Station’s burger.
1) The Classic Burger
On the east-side of the lake you can find Eudora Station. This establishment has three levels including a rooftop section, with a panoramic view of the West Lake and neighbouring King Qian's Temple. In my opinion, they serve the largest burger in town. Served with thicker-style French fries and a spring salad with balsamic vinegar, this simple classic burger will run you 55 RMB with mozzarella cheese, or 49 RMB without. This truly is a proper burger, served with iceberg lettuce for that right amount of crunch. Their bottom floor has more of a bar like atmosphere with a pool table, while the second floor is more secluded and full of large windows and plants.

Close to the Yellow Dragon Stadium is The Vineyard Cafe, a wine-cellar and restaurant that serves a variety of Western-style food. As of March, they have a new chef and an improved burger. This classic cheeseburger has a delicious thick patty, with the sauces served on the side and served with thin fries. It is 50 RMB if you go for dinner, but their weekday lunch special (11:00 – 14:30) has it for only 28 RMB. They also play host to the well known English Trivia Night on Thursday's at 21:00.

Teresa's is an arty coffee shop on the corner, across the street from the north gate of the Zhejiang University Yuquan campus. There venue boasts a vast drinks menu and gourmet Western-style food. The understated Beef Burger (37 RMB) is really a delicious steak burger with BBQ sauce. Don't pull out the oversized toothpick; it's there to help hold all the ingredients together. They also have a wonderfully juicy Chicken Burger (30 RMB). Teresa marinates her meat, so they are tasty and tender. All the burgers are served with fries and a salad (includes tomatoes!) with balsamic vinaigrette. The burgers are topped with mayonnaise, mustard and ketchup, plus cheddar cheese. The Hamburger Special includes any of her hamburger meals plus a drink (choose from 28 different drinks!) for only 48 RMB. Large, two-story windows let in a lot of light during the day. It's a smoke-free zone.

Angelo's is just north of the lake on Boachu Lu, and while they serve up Italian food done right, they also have two burgers to choose from. Their Mini Burger might look a bit like carnival food, but the beef/pork mix patty packs a nice peppery punch. It only includes cheese, a pickle and BBQ sauce, and is served with shoestring onion rings. It can be ordered in sets of 3, 6, or 9 (38 RMB; 68 RMB; 108 RMB). Their large Three Cheese Burger is served with an Australian WAGYA beef patty. It is topped with a slice of prosciutto ham, three cheeses (gorgonzola, mozzarella, parmesan), cucumber, rucola lettuce and pesto. The gorgonzola is a strong blue cheese, so if you tend not to like blue cheeses, ask to have it left off. Served with delicious steak fries, it will run you 78 RMB. They have complimentary bread and breadsticks. Memoirs of New York City line the walls. The kitchen is separated by glass so you can watch the chefs at work.

Located inside the Oakwood Residence is the Oakleaf Restaurant. Providing upscale services, their al a carte menu boasts the delicious Oakwood Beef Burger (78 RMB + 15%). Topped with cheddar cheese, crispy bacon and avocado (guacamole style), their bun is covered in sesame seeds and comes without any sauces (they can, of course, be requested). Served with a spring salad with Italian dressing, they are the only place that offer the choice of French fries, steak fries or crosscut fries. Their new restaurant is located next to the EAC building in the North Tower on the 4th floor, and their smaller, lounge-style restaurant is located in the South Tower on the 3rd floor.

December Chief’s burger.
3) The Budget Burger
A cafe by day and a bar by night, Ellen's is located just off of Zheda Lu, in the lane leading into a residence compound. Boasting affordable Western food, this hang out joint has a rustic wooden interior with benches and a skylight. As of March, their burger is served with a delicious fresh meat patty, topped with a toasted sesame bun (you can really taste the sesame!). The burger comes with or without cheese (22 RMB; 20 RMB), cucumber and a side of fries. Monday is free coffee day.

December Chief is the newest addition to the hamburger scene, and can be called a Burger Joint in the truest sense. Serving a wide range of burger choices including an Oyster Burger (18 RMB), their December Chief Special Beef Burger (22 RMB) includes bacon, cheddar cheese, Thousand Island dressing, sautéed onions and mushrooms. Their Regular Beef Burger is 15 RMB, and they also serve Chicken Burgers for 11 RMB. To add cheese and extra ingredients to your burger, expect an added 2-4 RMB. As a tribute to Canada, fries come with gravy (8 RMB) or ketchup (7 RMB). Onion Rings (8 RMB) are also available. Drinks range from 6-9 RMB, making the place very budget friendly. This tiny shop plays English songs from a Vancouver Radio Station, and is a smoke-free zone. It's the only place I've seen that offer gloves!

The best hamburgers are at Burger King.
Angelo's and Eudora are a joke. Expensive and not worth the value. Many places, like these two, uses cheap filler in the meat which gives off a slightly sweet taste which is NOT GOOD. It's cheap and makes them more money.
The boss at Eudora has the personality of a dead fish. Angelo was some Italian jerk who was ran out by his Chinese partners for some reason. I ate there twice and about gagged. The "sweet" hamburger and a pizza that had the cheese and toppings fall off the crust and tasted like crap. The place also loved SALT. Everything was SALTY. Covered up the taste of the mediocre food.
Raggae Bar?? Your writer went to Raggae Bar and ate a hamburger from there and actually said that it was GOOD? How much did he have to drink? How many joints did he smoke outside? Ellens? Like every other of these places with mediocre food. It's all bad. The menus are extremely tired. Hamburgers, Pizza, Italian food. Everyone of these places have the same menu.
Come to Hangzhou! But do not eat ANY western style food here, because it all sucks. It's not made right, it's undercooked, it is mediocre and not worth it. Don't go to the hotels either, the food is shite with them charging a 15% service charge. Screw them.

Mr. Zheng, Not saying, I disagree with you but I will say, for Chinese who was not raised up in America, they try very hard to cook American style. The dead fish personality, I have noticed that in many western restaurants in China. for the life of me, I do not understand why they act in such away. When I want real American food, I go home and cook it myself. Last time me and girlfriend was in America, she wanted a real hotpot. So checked everywhere in Dallas Texas, NO real Hotpots in Dallas. I did find a place in Houston Texas that had real Hotpots, but just like China, the price was hell...$275.00 USD for 4 people to eat a real Hotpot in America, not counting the 2 hour drive to get there. It would have been cheaper for me to go but everything and cook it at home. James Scott LightingOEM
