Guilin is usually the first stop for Chinese and foreign travelers on route to the stunning karst scenic spots famous throughout the area and the laid-back tourist town of Yangshuo. Here’s a guide to some of the best youth hostels in both Guilin and Yangshuo.

Guilin Flowers Youth Hostel is located in the central transport hub of the city, just 100 metres from Guilin Railway Station and 500 metres from the Bus Station. Popular with foreign backpackers, this hostel lives up to international youth hostel standards, providing clean refuge with lots of facilities and services including washing machines, fax, free wireless internet, pool tables, a DVD screening room, bar, restaurant, open air courtyard, international phone calls, luggage storage facilities, travel info etc.
Rooms are clean but not all rooms have TVs or en suite bathrooms. The interior décor is cosy and quite unique, with a cascade bar which creates a great social atmosphere and is often an icebreaker for lonesome travelers. There’s also a wall where guests can leave their impressions, tips or artwork for future guests to browse. What’s more, there’s another Guilin Flowers Youth Hostel in Yangshuo, so if you really enjoyed your stay at this one in Guilin, you might consider also choosing its counterpart in Yangshuo.

2) Guilin Xiaoyanglou International Youth Hostel桂林小洋楼国际青年旅舍 View In Map
Guilin Xiaoyanglou International Youth Hostel also enjoys a prime location close to the railway and bus station, taking just 5 minutes and 3 minutes to each respectively. The hostel is about half an hour’s drive from the airport. The hostel is equipped with a bar, restaurant, self-service washing machines, self-service kitchen, internet café, hang-out area, television room, a mini supermarket, safes to store valuables, bike rental, CD burning service etc.
Rooms have their own private bathrooms, air conditioning, 24-hour hot water and cable television. Guests can also ask for travel info and ticket services at the from desk, and can also avail of a free ride to the train station (rides to the airport are subject to a fee). Another bonus of this hostel is that all staff members understand English.

3) Guilin Backstreet Youth Hostel 桂林后街国际青年旅舍 View In Map
Strategically located in the heart of Guilin, access to this hostel is convenient and a wide range of amenities can be found nearby. Elephant Hill and the Lijiang River are all within easy reach. The first floor of this hostel is a café and book bar with a wide selection of English and Chinese travel books, as well as some scrap books with photos and messages from past guests. There are also two computers which can be accessed for 5 RMB per hour.
The bedrooms are extremely clean and various room sizes are on offer, such as dorm rooms with multiple beds, standard rooms, large one-bed rooms and three-bed rooms. The rooms vary in style and size, but each room has air conditioning, a private bathroom and 24-hour hot water. Other amenities include a self-service washing machine, self-service kitchen, travel info, ticket booking service, bike rental and wifi internet access.
Guests can get special membership cards for 50 RMB at the front desk, which entitles them to special room rates and over 3000 discounts which can be used on dining, accommodation, travel and entertainment around the world. Those who travel frequently can seriously consider getting one of these.

4) Yangshuo Liriver International Youth Hostel 阳朔雍圣府国际青年旅舍 View In Map
Set in a traditional Chinese building, this hostel enjoys an idyllic location on the banks of the Li River. The hostel boasts a rooftop bar with panoramic views of the river below and some of the rooms also have great views of the surrounding scenery. The hostel’s restaurant provides Western breakfasts, wood-fired pizza, pasta and a wide range of beverages including coffee, tea, fruit juice etc.
The entire hostel has WIFI coverage and chartered buses and bike rental schemes are also available. Guests also have access to a self-service washing machine, a pool table, a tours desk, free reservations to see local variety shows and airplane/train ticket reservations service.

5) Yangshuo Backstreet Youth Hostel阳朔桂花巷青年旅舍 View In Map
This hostel’s been around for about seven years already and is nestled in a lane just off bustling West Street. It was given a new facelift in early 2011. This is a fairly small hostel, offering snug rooms and a noise-free environment. The hostel offers four standard rooms and three double rooms, as well as 24 single beds. Each room is equipped with an air conditioner, colour tv and private bathrooms. Hot water is available for 24 hours and a wide range of useful products are sold at the front desk. Backstreet Youth Hostel also has a bar, a reading area, broadband internet, satellite television and film screening room, access to drinking water, sewing kits, luggage storage and travel advice services. Bike rental services are also available here.

Getting there: West Street is just beside the bus station, so go along West Street until you see a big red sign with yellow characters saying “阑桂坊酒吧”. A small alleyway should be beside this sign. Walk down the alley for about 15 metres.
