Halloween Happenings: 2010 Round-up of Spooky Parties in China

If you’re starting to feel a chill down your spine lately, don’t automatically assume it’s the flux in temperature. As Halloween approaches, perhaps it’s the souls of the underworld that are starting to get restless. Although Halloween is very much a western festival, the culture and traditions associated with it have been catching on quickly in China over the years. Halloween parties and events are appearing in cities large and small across the country, offering you the chance to be creative with costumes and unleash that dark desire to party hard! So to point you in the right direction, we’ve prepared this article which lists some of the best Halloween nightlife events in a city (hopefully) near you!

Beijing :
There’s certainly no shortage of Halloween events and this year many of the parties seem to be spread out over the entire weekend, since Oct 31st falls on a slightly inconvenient Sunday night.

Sat Oct 30th:
The biggest and most popular Halloween party this year had got to be Yen Fetish. An institution in its own right, Yen Fetish has been responsible for luring out some of the kinkiest costumes in town in previous years. Even if you’re not into the Drum n’ Bass and Techno music played at the iconic 706 Factory location, it’s just one of those places to see and be seen. And of course, the party’s theme is an invitation for letting your darkest costume fantasies run wild. Latest whispers say that pre-sale tickets are running low and there have been cases of severe disappointment at the door in recent years; so avoid disappointment and get your ticket ASAP! Another established institution Acupuncture Records, throw their Spooked Halloween party at LAN Club on the 30th. Three rooms feature three different styles of music, starring vampire-turned DJs Weng Weng, X.L.F., ELVIS T., Pancake Lee, Terry Tu, Ivan Zhang, Demone, Cedric, Pump Su, Elixir Group and Yang 2. Costumes are welcome and drinks are discounted. More info here.

The Rocky Horror British Ball promises to be a big hit, drawing its theme from the famous 1975 film The Rocky Horror Picture Show. Guests will be treated to a Champagne reception, live music by Big City Beat, lucky draws with fantastic prizes, a five course meal plus a Rocky Horror themed dessert and a costume competition. Not only does the event promise to be a rocking night, but funds raised will go towards a number of very worthy causes. More info here.

Partygoers on a budget can check out the free Halloween party at Bling or Collage Bar where lots of spooky fun awaits.

Sun Oct 31st:
Two of Beijing’s major live music venues 2Kolegas and Star Live have chosen to stay true to Halloween’s date by throwing their spooky celebrations on Sunday October 31st. Six of Beijing’s most promising and successful rock bands keep the ghosts away at 2Kolegas, unless one of them happens to be Kurt Cobain or Jim Morrison, in which case they’re more than welcome to join in on the jam session. Things get even louder at Star Live however when Chinese metal bands Twisted machine and Yaksa perform, among others. And if it’s not their screaming vocals causing a racket, the fans of Xie Tianxiao (who’s set to make a guest performance) surely will. More info here.

Though Q Bar may not be known for its raucous parties, their special range of Halloween inspired cocktails should be “fang”tastic. It should be interesting to see what kind of taste-bud blowing concoctions they come with. More info here.

Shanghai :
Heineken enthusiastically kicks off the Halloween weekend by organizing a two-night pub crawl across the city, which finally ends at the That’s Shanghai Halloween Party at Bar Rouge on the 30th. Besides taking you to some of the liveliest bars in town, the pub crawl promises to fill you up with plenty of booze in between trips too. More info here.

It’s a rockin’ Halloween at Yuyintang on the 30th, with four of Shanghai’s most popular rock bands paying tribute to such class bands as Joy Division, The Misfits, Kiss and Wham! More info here.

A “Jack-o-lantern” inspired techno set will blast from the speakers at Mao Livehouse on the 30th, as German DJ Boro Lo and guests take over the decks. Read on here. LoGO celebrates everyone’s favourite dress-up holiday by throwing a Halloween edition of Trash-a-GoGo. A variety of bands including The Dudettes, Friend or Foe, The Beat Bandits, DJ B.O and Paralyze will raise noise decimal levels to haunting levels. Details here.

Shanghai Nightmare, the only themed haunted house in Shanghai, is inviting courageous visitors to enter its doors anytime from now until October 31st. If interacting with ghosts and monsters in the dark arouses your curiosity then come and see what other frightful surprises await… More details here.

Why not got to Rehab this Halloween? The one at Dada that is! On October 30th, Dada transforms into a haunted hospital where, no doubt, evil doctors and nurses will get up to no good. More info here. Meanwhile, intelligence has revealed that more gorey and blood thirsty characters plan to invade M1NT on the 30th. Partygoers to the venue are strongly advised to dress up so as to blend in with the vampires, witches and monsters.

Node Lounge gets musical this Halloween with a live performance by Tokyo Ghetto Shamisen on the 30th. But the music and madness keeps coming, even after the live gig, thanks to DJ Amiga, Electrical Lovers and VJ Michi. More info here.
 

 

Guangzhou :
Halloween kicks off on the 29th in Guangzhou thanks to Duo’s Masquerade Ball. Dress in your most elegant ball gown and suit and dance to hot tracks in the club’s “dungeon.” More info here. The fun continues the next night at Duo with their “Devil’s Night” themed party. This time, partygoers are encouraged to dig out their most grotesque and wicked outfits. More here.

Halloween doesn’t by-pass Hooley’s this year either. Bolt Action will be drilling their rock anthems deep into your brain on the 30th. Watch out! More details right here.

If you’re one of those people who’ve been meticulously planning your sexy Halloween outfit this year, you better choose an equally sexy place to show it off. Well, there’s no better place to strut your stuff than at the Halloween Party at China Hotel, A Marriot Hotel. Featuring lots of performances, games and more, the party promises to be sizzling hot, hot, hot… read on here.

It’s “Chaos in the Jungle” this Halloween at Grand House. DJ Wash will be spinning the most terrifyingly amazing Drum n’ Base tunes accompanied by Rebearth MC. A “Spook-tacular” party kicks off at the Ritz-Carlton on October 30th, with costumes, games and drinks so alluring that even the dead won’t be able to stay away. More info here.

Hangzhou :

Lots of haunted madness is lurking in the not so distant future….

More doom and gloom awaits at the Bellevue at the Hyatt Regency on the 30th. Come in your most scarey costume and exchange ghost stories (or phone numbers) with fellow party zombies.

Trust the Irish to celebrate Halloween in style, especially since that’s the birthplace of Halloween. Shamrock Irish Sports Bar is giving away prizes to those who come in the best costumes and a live band will be rocking the house until the wee hours. More here.

Hangzhou’s most popular live music venue Traveler Bar has chosen one of China’s biggest and most ferocious metal bands –Suffocated – to set the tone of their Halloween bash. Come in costume or in your usual Goth attire and get ready to head-bash the night away. Details here.

More spooky mayhem awaits punters at Maya and Eudora Station on October 31st. Eudora is even organizing a drinking competition; just remember to get up in time for work or school the next day!
