Yet Another Illegal Rooftop Building Spotted in Dongguan

Yet Another Illegal Rooftop Building Spotted in Dongguan

Spotting illegal buildings and causing a commotion online has really become something of a fad in China lately. First there was the now infamous mountain villa in Beijing, then the rooftop temple in Shenzhen. The latest to rear its illegal head is a set of twin villas perched atop a three-storey building in Dongguan, Guangdong.

The building is located in Shijie Township in Dongguan and is composed of two major parts: a lower section that consists of a three-storey grey building and an upper part that is made up of two red villas connected to the lower building via several stilts. The two villas are connected at the back by a common room but from the front it almost looks like they’re suspended in the air.

The building has apparently been there for years and the owner is said to come from Hong Kong. After netizens made enough noise, local authorities looked into the matter. On September 10, the Shijie Law Enforcement Bureau stated that the owner had a legal building permit. However, because the building exceeds the permitted size limit, it now constitutes as illegal building. Local authorities plan to investigate the case further and netizens can once again take credit in identifying an illegal building.
