Wuhan Man Sells “Shame” on Street: 10 RMB to Spit in His Face, 100 RMB to Slap Him
Oct 18, 2013 By eChinacities.com

On the afternoon of October 11, a very special stall was set up at the intersection of Liberation Road and Wansongyuan Road in the city of Wuhan. For a fee, customers were able to spit or slap a man, or even pay him to kneel down for them.

The man is surnamed Qin and is 28 years old. Qin has worked at many jobs, but feels that none of these have given him any “face”; this was the inspiration behind his new initiative. The idea was to “sell shame”. For a 10 RMB fee, customers can spit directly into his face; for 20 RMB, customers receive a kneel and a kowtow with the head pressed against the ground; and for 100 RMB, customers are entitled to slap him across the face. However, the spitting and slapping was only available to female customers and the force of the slap could not exceed 3 kg.

Written on the back of the man’s vest is a sign with the words, “You can spit in my face, but please don’t spit on my back.” The man thinks that customers are able to appreciate the concept of “paying for services”, but they shouldn’t insult his character by spitting upon his back. Qin says that he wants to completely lose his “face” in this process – a kind of cleansing ritual that he hopes will give him a second chance to gain wealth and prosperity.

Although there were many onlookers at the scene, nobody was willing to be his “customer”. Many people felt that Qin should try to find a proper job and that this attempt to earn money was degrading. However, there were also some who commended Qin’s courage.

Maybe more Chinese will follow in his footsteps. If this actually allows him to completely lose the culturally and socially crippling facesaving habits that keep so many Chinese smallminded and trapped, he may truly re-emerge as a more robust and resilient man. A boon to China! But is this high profile, in-your-face (pun intended) humiliation effective in getting rid of your cultural tendencies? It's also about the small, everyday things that must be endured. Most westerners have their dignity regardless of whether they have the respect of the community, but especially in China they seem to be inseparable.

"the spitting and slapping was only available to female customers". The guy found a way to practice some of his BDSM fetishes in public, it's a shame that noone actually helped him.
