Woman in Changsha Finds Counterfeit ID Card Using her Information

A woman in Changsha found a counterfeit ID card on the floor at a bank entrance. Being a good Samaritan she picked it up to take it to the security guard, but something about the card was oddly familiar. It was hers!!!!! Or at least appeared to be.

At the time, Miss Wang was thinking, ‘this is my first time in this bank; it can’t be my ID card.’ She rummaged in her bag, pulled out her actual ID card and was then able to compare the two. She discovered that the numbers and address on the fake card were hers, even the photo was her. “If it weren’t for the address line of the card getting two characters wrong (instead of单元 [danyuan] it had党员[dangyuan]) , I really would have thought it was mine”, said Miss Wang.

Miss Wang lost her ID card last year and got a replacement. After close inspection, she said the photo used in the counterfeit ID is a picture she had previously put online so the person presumably got her info from the previous ID and the photo from the internet.

Miss Wang took the ID card to the local police station, who confirmed that the card was a fake. The police concluded that the magnetic strip could not be read. After failing to use the card in the bank the counterfeiter probably dropped it outside. A perplexing mystery was solved for Miss Wang.

using a fake id in china gets you stopped but not held.. this is a frequent loophole. companies/offices will refuse to provide whatever service you were buying, but they will not apprehend you for having tried to do so on a fake id.
