If a person does not receive a rabies shot after being bitten by a dog, then that person is likely to become infected with rabies and then go crazy and bite other people as a result. That’s why it’s such a surprise that a person who ingests poisonous wild plants will demonstrate the same symptoms.

On the night of September 23, village cadre went to expedite the payment of an electric bill from a villager named Li in Wangxuezhuang Village in Hebei Province. However, upon entering the premises, the cadre would receive a round of abuse from Li. The village cadre considered Li to be usually well-behaved and stable, and that Li must be inebriated to have this kind of reaction. The cadre thought that he would just come again at a later time to collect the money. However, when the cadre turned to leave, he was suddenly attacked by Li the moment the cadre turned his back. The attacks consisted of bites, of which two of his bite marks can be seen marked deep in the flesh of the cadre. As the cadre found this type of incident to be most peculiar, he immediately alerted the police authorities.

After hearing the report made by the cadre, police arrived at Li’s residence to find him half-naked with only a pair of muddy pants on. Li was writhing on the floor. Police had wanted to help him up off the floor, but like a man out of control, Li attempted to bite the officers with his mouth. Having no alternative, police used restraints to place the man under control.

When a search was performed upon the premises, a 30 year-old woman and a six to seven year old girl were found lying upon the bed. The woman had her eyes shut while the girl could be heard moaning; vomit could be seen scattered all over the floor. When the police loudly shouted for both people to come to attention, the woman had no reaction whereas the young girl opened her eyes in response. The girl told the police that the family had acted normal before dinner last night but that a half hour after dinner, the father suddenly took off his shirt and rolled around on the floor. For her part, the mother would take to the bed as a result of the affliction and vomit continuously. When the police examined their dinner, they saw a type of wild plant that is rarely seen; as a result, they deduced that this is a case of food poisoning.

As time is of the essence during an emergency, police would send the Li family to the hospital under the help of the village cadre, as well as sending along the remnants of their suspected dinner. According to the doctor’s diagnosis, the Li family appeared to have been poisoned from ingesting “mandala”. After a series of treatments, the entire Li family regained consciousness.

Upon recovery, Li told reporters that he had often heard from other people that eating wild plants is beneficial to one’s health; after having dug a few of these plants up, the family ate it for dinner. Li had never thought that only half an hour after dinner there would be such an adverse effect upon their health; this is why it was very fortunate that their daughter doesn’t commonly like to eat wild plants. As she didn’t eat very much of it, the result upon her was likewise comparatively small. Li said, if it wasn’t for everyone’s help, he couldn’t imagine what the result might have been.
