Charles Xue, a venture capitalist and famous microblogger on Sina Weibo better known by his alias Xu Manzi, was detained in Beijing for suspected involvement in prostitution on August 23.
Reports claim that police got a tip from residents of a housing compound that he was with a prostitute. However, in a twist to the story, Xue’s arrest is seen by some as a retaliation for his outspokenness. An outspoken figure on a number of major social issues including child-trafficking and corruption, Xue accused a senior government official of dereliction of duty back in July which some are now pointing at as the real reason for his arrest. Moreover, before his arrest he was reportedly linked to a suspected rumormonger called Qin Zhihui, a link that Xue has denied.
China is currently in the midst of a major crackdown on rumor-mongoring, which last week saw the downfall of an illegal PR business called Beijing Erma Interactive Marketing and Planning Company. It is claimed that the firm was responsible for manufacturing the infamous Guo Meimei scandal in 2011.
