Students Complain about Cheerleader Uniforms for Peking University Aerobics Class

Peking University Health Science Center has instituted mandatory physical education training for female students. The physical education class consists of aerobics training and performances. Those who do not participate will be penalized. Female students are upset about the cheerleader uniforms the university provided for the classes, saying that the skirt is too short to be decent.

A student named Xiao Jia said that the P.E. teacher told the students that aerobics classes and performance were mandatory.

“From around the beginning of March we have had to do physical education exercises for about an hour every week. Even if we had a lot of work, we all had to attend,” said Xiao Jia. “This semester, about 400 girls participated in the course. I do not really understand why the school forced us to participate.”

Xiao Jia said that the school also organized extra aerobics training early Friday morning to get ready for the performance. She said that the physical education teacher told the students that they would be deducted five points from their P.E. grade if they did not perform.

Many of the girls complained that the skirt supplied by the university was too short to the point of indecency. “The skirts hit a lot of taller girls in the middle of thigh, and the lining is very thin.” One student in the class said Xiao Mei said that the skirt showed way too much leg when she did the aerobics routine. “There are moves in the routine where we jump and squat,” said Xiao Mei.

A representative from the university said that the aerobics show is not mandatory for students and that the school will purchase leggings for girls in who participate in the show. The school said that they have met with student representatives to work to solve the dispute.
