South Korea Puts Temporary Hold on Visa Applications in Northeast China

The South Korean government has instructed 52 Chinese travel agencies to put a temporary hold on visa applications for Chinese tourists to South Korea. The temporary hold may be related to the sales of North Korean tour packages by Chinese agencies.

The temporary hold, which begins on April 18, may affect the future business of the tour agencies. The 52 travel agencies affected are in Heilongjiang, Jilin, and Liaoning. The South Korean Consulate General announced the hold on their website in an announcement dated March 25. The consulate did not give a specific region for the measure.

A spokesperson from the consulate told South Korea’s Joongang Daily that the travel agencies in question mainly sell tour packages to North Korea.

An official from the South Korean Consulate General in Qingdao said, “Although we cannot disclose the exact circumstances, we have been instructed by the higher authorities to work to stop tourism to North Korea.”
