Shanzhai Sydney Opera House Spotted in Jiangsu Province

Does this kind of news actually surprise anyone anymore? A netizen recently uploaded a photo of the world famous Sydney Opera House, but there was a catch: this particular one wasn’t located in Australia but in Hai’an County, Jiangsu Province.

The replica was nestled within the nearby Seven Star Lake Ecological Park and has already been around for many years according to locals. However, the building was never actually put to any use so now vegetable plots from local villagers and weeds surround the property.

According to a comment by a staff member of the Seven Star Lake Ecological Park Scenic Area, the “opera house” is actually a 120 square meter large glass building that’s supposed to look like a blooming flower and will become a greenhouse for various flower plants when the building opens to the public some time next year. The building is currently in its second phase of construction and cost 600,000 RMB to build. Now that’s one expensive (and very tacky) “greenhouse”.
