A father in Beijing who hit headlines in November for his unusual fund-raising methods has received up to 680,000 RMB in donations from members of the public who were touched by his plight.

31 year old Xia Jun caused a stir last month when he stood outside a Beijing subway station offering himself as a human punch bag- 10 RMB a hit- to raise money for his 2 year old son, Haohao, who is suffering from Leukemia.

The man’s devotion to his son struck a chord with passersby and netizens alike, and has prompted a debate on the state of China’s limited social welfare system. According to Xia, he had medical insurance, but due to restrictions, the insurance could only cover around half of Haohao’s medical expenses.

Xia has since asked the public to stop donating as he now has enough to cover Haoaho’s treatment.
