Overseas Returnee Conned Out of 890,000 RMB through Online Dating Scam

Another poor sap has been taken in, in what is fast becoming a classic China con: a middle aged married lady poses as a beautiful young seductress online, reels in a man with more money than sense and persuades him to part with a sizable portion of his cash-all without ever meeting him in person.

31 year old Li Qiang (pseudonym) believed he had gotten lucky when he met a beautiful, rich young girl online named Duan Muxue. She claimed that she was born in 1984, held a Canadian green card, her parents both held foreign citizenship and that they lived in a fancy villa in Beijing’s Shunyi area.

Over the next few months of chatting online, Duan Muxue kept finding reasons to borrow money from Li; she needed to start a business, she was sick and needed to go to the hospital; one time she claimed that her parents had taken away her passport in an attempt to force her into marriage, and she needed to buy another one.

She managed to persuade Li Qiang to deposit over 890,000 RMB into the bank account of Zhang Xiaoyi, which of course turned out to be Duan Muxue’s real name. In fact, far from being a ‘baifumei’, Zhang turned out to be a married 38 year old with a seven year old child from the countryside in Tianjin.

Li Qiang discovered the truth about his ‘girlfriend’ only after she was arrested for identity fraud and police contacted him over the case. Hopefully he’ll be a little more cautious about wiring money to complete strangers he meets online from now on.

Canada doesn't have Green Cards... that should have been the first clue there.
