On November 28th, China’s Xiamen Airlines started hiring new flight attendants. Applicants underwent several eliminations in the interview process, including resumes reviews and preliminary determinations of each applicant's presentation of overall physique and health. After the selection process, just over 70 applicants remained from more than 2,000 that had applied.

This particular selection process for new stewards and stewardesses is more like a competition than a job interview. First, Xiamen Airlines canvassed the whole country looking for potential applicants. Then, those that applied had had to undergo vigorous selection: resume reviews at registration; health and physique checks; written and verbal examinations in English and other subjects; and finally, an interview at the end. Each stage of the selection process aimed to eliminate applicants, and few lucky enough to remain and advance to the next level.

In the preliminary review of overall physique and presentation, applicants are pictured here in a line up in front of the judges. The judges vote to determine whether the applicants can advance to the next stage or face elimination. Aside from direct advancements and eliminations, there's even a “revival” stage where those who received 3 votes (one vote less than needed to advance in the qualifications) face off in second-round eliminations for their chance at winning the remaining spots to advance to the next level.

In the preliminary checkup on health and fitness, a doctor is pictured here examining an applicant's teeth for any visible imperfections. The health examinations include not only the usual review of height, correctness of vision and color vision, but also other areas like appearance of teeth and nose, flexibility of joints, scarring, unusual growth of body hair, tattoos, and even underarm odor are to be checked and sniffed out for elimination purposes.

The good doctor then proceeds to sniff at the applicant's armpits for unusual body odors.

Those that pass all the preliminary tests are then to proceed to the next stages of competition, including a re-examination of health and physique by those higher up in the company's administration. Then, those that pass the secondary tests are admitted into training. Only those that pass the final trainings will be granted a spot as cabin staff aboard Xiamen Airline flights.
