Need for Speed: 10-Year-Old Steals Car for High Speed Joyride

On the evening of March 9, in Zhoukou, Henan, highway patrol spotted a van without a license parked illegally in a service area. Police approached the vehicle and were surprised to find a 10 year-old boy alone inside the car. More surprising was that he was in the driver's seat.

“When we first saw the car, we thought that the driver had been careless and had left his kid in the car,” said a police representative. When the police asked the boy what had happened they were shocked by his answer: the 10 year-old boy said that he driven the car onto the highway by himself.

The police were nice to the young boy, who was probably a little terrified. They gave him some snacks and set him up in their office until his very frazzled mother could get down to the police station. It turns out that the boy, Zhou Xiaoming (pseudonym), had been missing for two days. Zhou Xiaoming had stolen the car from the streets near his home in the city and taken off. The boy's family lives in the suburbs near a row of repair shops, therefore the keys had been in the car and the door had been conveniently unlocked. The 10 year-old saw the opportunity and decided to take the car on a little joyride.

Apparently stealing cars is not a new thing for young Zhou Xiaoming. His parents said that when the adults aren't looking, Zhou Xiaoming often tries to get inside of unlocked cars. He even taught himself to drive this way.

Zhou Xiaoming's family said that they have tried to teach him not to get into other people's cars. Unfortunately, Zhou Xiaoming seems to be a young criminal mastermind in training and their attempts have remained in vain. The stolen van was rightfully returned to its owner and because he is still in elementary school, Zhou Xiaoming will not be serving any time in jail. The police can only “criticize,” him and try to teach him that stealing cars is really not okay.
