After some rumblings in the press, it has been confirmed that superstar footballer Lionel Messi will be the new face of Huawei.
Huawei will sign a two year contract with Messi for 5 to 6 million Euros annually (about 36 to 46 million Yuan), in which Messi will serve as the company’s spokesperson for global promotion.
Interestingly enough, Messi is currently the spokesperson for Samsung smartphones. Huawei’s CEO of Consumer BG, Yu Chengdong, once said that Huawei’s next goal was to go beyond Samsung and Apple, and now Huawei has nabbed the face of Samsung for itself.
Huawei is currently experiencing tremendous growth in Europe. According to a study by market research agency GFK, in the high-end smartphone market (about 400-500 Euros), Huawei has a market share of 45.7% in Spain and 27.9% in Italy. Messi is one the world’s most recognizable athletes with enormous appeal in Europe and the Americas, and the move from Huawei is clearly an effort to continue building their brand overseas.

Huawei is making the wrong move, the smartphone market it already heavily saturated. They might enjoy a few good years but eventually the market will eat them up. They should stick to their main operations in telecommunications.
