Hefei Supermarket Gives Away Live Chicks in Promotion, Angers Customers

Hefei Supermarket Gives Away Live Chicks in Promotion, Angers Customers
Apr 21, 2014 By eChinacities.com

A supermarket in Hefei has come under some pretty heavy fire for a new promotional deal where they give you a live chick for spending more than 49 RMB or 29 RMB when buying a designated drink. Many customers turned down the offer as they feared for the livelihood of the little birds and questioned the logic of giving away live animals to just about anyone.

The store said later that the goal was to teach young children responsibility by giving them something to take care of. As of now the promotion continues, but the store’s management is considering stopping the give-away after the strong backlash.

Aside from the moral grounds for rejecting the ‘gift’, some people were also concerned over the health risks of accepting an animal that might not have been tested for diseases or viruses.

The birds' livelihood? They are afraid that the chick will lose its' job?

The depths of disrespect and stupidity is astounding. Like said above, just when I thought I'd seen / heard everything...At least perhaps we can feel a bit relieved that common folk were concerned. I bet that wouldnt've happened a few years ago. I shudder to think of what will become of most of those little birds. Hopefully a quick death by street cat. Better than a slow death from exposure, neglect, malnutrition and rough mishandling (injury). SMH,WTF, et al

This story makes me proud of Chinese people, at least the people in Hefei. The promotion was designed to appeal to China's barbaric nature. Here , bring this baby chicken home and enjoy torturing and killing it then eat it. But the people in Hefei said not us, and actually cared about the lives of these animals. I wonder what would have been the result in Guangzhou? Hefei, I must visit this wonderful city.

Stupid idea, I bet you 80-90% of those chicks end up dead before they grow into adults.. and if they do... well you can guess what happens after that...

I understand the idea of trying to teach children the lesson of responsibility. But the larger risk of disease is a real threat in China. Also you do not know if the families will have proper means to take care of animals, regular pets are difficult enough.
