Would Hangzhou enthusiast Marco Polo turn in his grave at such stories?

Hangzhou’s West Lake is renowned for its natural beauty, though recently photos depicting swarms of tourists dangling their feet in water has struck up a fiery debate. From afar, the lake looks as if it has become one giant foot bath, which surely doesn’t settle well with the locals.

Many netizens have also expressed their distaste at the habits of the tourists, with many using the photo to discuss what they feel is a widespread crisis of tourists with bad manners.

In response, Chen Zhihua, who is a spokesman for the Propaganda Department of the West Lake Management Committee, stated that the West Lake has nine water inlet points and seven outlet points; and as such the entire body of water in the lake is replaced over a period of 30 days and is therefore “clean”.

Chen also cited the fact that there were various promenades built beside the shallow areas of the lake, and that since many people frequently paddle in the water, the Committee ensures that the water quality is up to standard.
