Foreigners Fined for Jaywalking and Cheekiness to Police Officer

Foreigners Fined for Jaywalking and Cheekiness to Police Officer
May 27, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Two foreign nationals got into trouble on the evening of May 24 after they tried to use their apparent lack of communication skills as an excuse for Jaywalking. Unbeknownst to them, the cop they were pretending not to understand spoke excellent English and they ended up being taken to the police station and fined.

The two men, whose nationality hasn’t been disclosed, were attempting to cross the intersection of Changning Road and Dingxi Road at a red light. Jiao Jinjun, a police officer, saw this and asked them to ‘please stop and go back.’

The two men ignored him so Jiao stood in front of them and asked for their passports. The two men decided to be cheeky, first demanding to see Jiao’s identity card and then claiming that they were color blind. Jiao was not amused and called his colleagues to take them down to the police station where they were fined an undisclosed sum.

Passersby who witnessed the incident posted photos online, and the policeman was praised for his excellent English abilities, and his commitment to traffic regulations.

If the light was red, why cross? You're giving the police a good reason to annoy a foreigner.

I know its aggravating to be singled out for breaking a rule you see others break...but honestly if you're breaking a rule the sympathy ends there. "Because the Chinese do it" is the worst reason to do anything. They also run the air conditioners with the windows open.

Also it is the police. Say what you want about the police in your own time but suck up to them and be the perfect gentlemen/lady whenever you deal with them. That is just Life 101

To all these experts on how to handle 'foreign relations' ie. dealing with locals in China, get over yourselves. You're here to get what you can out of the place so show some sense if not appreciation for what you're getting out of the situation. These cocky road crossers are trying to be smartass*#s and they got caught plain and simple. They wouldn't dare try any of this cr^p in their home country (unless they're football hooligans) bc they know they're going to get busted straight away but like other arrogant foreigners, they come to Asia and think they can walk around like they own the place bc of their delusion that they are somehow superior. You think yourself better than Asians because you're foreign? You are not.

Bullshit, you Chinese people think we think we are superior. In fact all we think is that when in Rome do as the Romans do, Chinese don't abide by any rules , why should foreigners ?????

Bullshit about sums it up. "You all think you are better because you are foreign". Said by the Chinese self haters. Would you like to add "if you don't like it then go home"? and for the win "It is probably Japans fault"

lao wai shi bu hao, dui bu dui. lao wai tai kai fang .....how many days do we hear this shit. the truth is china doesn't give a fuck about its own people but uses its time causing us shit. I am fed up of this, the police just play with us here. Back in the UK I think the police are also not the most helpful or hard working government department but they are 1000 times better than here. Avoid the police in China at all costs, or prepare to be screwed either financially or in terms of wasted time and patience.

Well, I am sure part of the reason why they stopped them was because they were foreigners. But the foreigners had two choices here: 1) Make asses of themselves, put on a staring show and disrespect the ATTEMPT at law enforcement or 2) Decide it is good the police are ACTUALLY doing their job, walk back and use their actions as a model to all Chinese in the viewing. A lot of foreigner complain the government isn't doing enough... well it does help if we show the masses how to do things right too. They do follow by example... slowly. Obviously they took the dumber of the two choices and then blew it up. I always tell my friends not to make fun of Chinese in English. Someone has to be the bigger man (literally and figuratively).

I think the point is not that they were jaywalking, it's that they ignored him telling them to stop. Everyone knows they can jaywalk without penalty 95% of the time...but once in a while there is actually an officer there blowing their whistle to tell people to stop on the red light. If people ignore this, they get stopped....locals or foreigners.

I think they really got fined for their bad attitude. Seriously, just walk back to the curb and wait for the light.

They should have been deported. Assholes like this come here to be dicks because they know they would get their asses kicked in their home country. For those complaining about them enforcing the law when it comes to foreigners you really should wake the fuck up. China is a racist country. There are no human rights here. No rule of law. There is no excuse for ignoring a police officer. When we come to this country we should show that we come from civilized countries. Respect for the law and respect for authority. Just because the locals behave uncivilized doesn't mean we should follow their lead.

here in Shenzhen people break the rules all the time when it comes to driving and walking on the road etc,no one does a thing about it.

Jaywalking laws are dangerous and created by driving and car making lobbies so really enforcing them and implementing them is about killing pedestrians while keeping drivers from being incriminated. It is actually safer to cross away from intersections as you only have to look out for traffic going two ways at most instead of four. Also if the pedestrian is smart enough and paying attention, they will be able to cross when it is safe and no cars need to be stopped.

Yeah you know I read that too. City streets used to be assumed as the space of pedestrians to walk around, jaywalking wasn't a thing until cars wanted to be able to drive faster. Now it seems absurd and uncouth to have people walking in the street.

I drive in Shenzhen and I love that Chinese are SHOCKED when I allow them to cross the street safely. They look back to see the drive at least 3 times, like: what just happened.

Yeah. Nobody ever seen a Chinese breaking a rule. Like, crossing a roadway when the light is red, driving a bike or an ebike on the left lane, on the walkway, driving a car on the bike lane... Nobody do that in China, those things are no common at all. Tue bu tue ?
