dIt’s never too long before yet another story featuring questionable animal rights appears in China. This time Chimelong Safari Park play the role of PETA’s next target, after “marrying” two of their elephants in a colorful ceremony on May 12.

Elephants Toni and Maria were wed as a group of other animals, mostly orangutans and pigs apparently, took up the role of “honor guards”. Under the direction of Mr. Tang, the animals arranged themselves prior to the “bride” arriving on the scene, then a line of elephants used their trunks to lift up wreaths as Maria made her way down the aisle.

Once there, Toni then used his trunk to lift up a red scarf onto Maria’s head, with the host (presumably human) of the ceremony asking, “Are you willing to marry the beautiful, gentle Maria?” After which Toni nodded his head in agreement.

A parrot, which was previously trained to utter the phrase “Long may you love each other!” (百年好合) fluffed up his lines and ended up saying “gongxi facai”—a New Year’s greeting—instead, which got a few laughs from onlookers. The parrot then used its beak to pass flowers to the new bride, and the ceremony ended with the two happily married elephants using their trunks to “kiss” each other.

Kind of sounds like something out of a Lewis Carroll novel, right?
