Customers Hate China Mobile's Tacky “Happy Tomb Sweeping Festival,” Message
Apr 02, 2015 By eChinacities.com

On the morning of March 30, Shaanxi Mobile (which is part of China Mobile) subscribers received a message from 10086 that read, “Dear Four Star Client, Hello. Tomb Sweeping Festival is approaching. Shaanxi Mobile wants to wish you a happy holiday. If you wish to stop the service to your phone during the holiday for free text KTJJR to 10086 and enjoy your holiday.”

“I received an automated text message wishing me a Happy Tomb Sweeping Festival,” said Ms Li. “This message could be really depressing to a lot people.”

Mr. Wang also though that the text message was in poor taste. He moved to Shaanxi 10 years ago. The first time that he received the automated text message for Tomb Sweeping Festival, it made him feel sick to his stomach. It seems the mobile company sends these yearly texts to its “four star,” and “five star,” customers. Wow, lucky them!

“There are many festivals throughout the year, but for this one, the focus is different,” said Hu Xiaoyan. Tomb Sweeping Festival, or Qingming Festival is about paying homage to one's ancestors, and the memories of ancestors. Therefore, saying “Happy Holidays,” on Tomb Sweeping Festival is a really tacky thing to do. Netizen @Yaoseng commented on Weibo, “How could anyone be happy about Qingming Festival?”

A representative of the China Mobile 10086 customer service hotline said that customers get holiday texts on the New Year, Spring Festival, Tomb Sweeping Festival, Dragon Boat Festival, May Day and other observed holidays to offer free shut-down service during the holiday times. China Mobile customer service added that sending a text for Tomb Sweeping Festival was thoughtless and said that they have apologized to users.

Well the students and labor workers who get a day or 2 off seem pretty damn happy to me! I think A LOT more people are going to go traveling than "pay homage" to their ancestors this weekend! Just call it what it is. A holiday. Am i right?
