Considering Crimea: Should China Side With The US or Russia?
Mar 25, 2014 By eChinacities.com

Editor’s note: The situation in Crimea, Ukraine, has escalated in recent weeks. A recent referendum showed that the overwhelming majority of Crimeans want emancipation from Ukraine and want to join Russia (though both Kiev, the EU, and the US have questioned its authenticity). The situation has caused friction between cold war rivals, the US and Russia. But where does China stand on the matter? This article, translated from Chinese media, shows us a glimpse of what China’s various options are, albeit through the use of some controversial stereotypes.

Political tensions between the West (led by the US) and Russia have grown increasingly since the political crisis in Ukraine and the presence of Russian troops in Crimea. After Crimea voted for independence through the March 16 referendum, plans are being made to incorporate the region into the Russian Federation, so US-Russian relations have entered a tense Cold War-era style confrontation.

The US-Russia dispute has caught the attention of the world and of China. Should China side with the US or Russia? Results of a recent online opinion poll show overwhelming support for China’s northern neighbor.

Side with Russia?

China considers the Russian viewpoint as in line with China’s national interests. Since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Western countries, led by the US, have been hostile towards China. The West has implemented a long-term strategy of containment towards China using various blockades including sanctions. Multiple issues that encroached on China’s internal affairs including Taiwan, Tibet and human rights, have interfered with diplomatic relations. Japan, along with other nations, has continued to implement containment strategies against China and has remained China’s number one enemy. Russia is actually historically an enemy of China as well, but at this moment the world is shaped by shared interests and there are no permanent enemies or friends. The US is the world’s largest superpower and the biggest obstacle to China’s rise to the top. A joint alliance between China and Russian against the United States is in line with China’s national interests and current power strategy.

Side with the US?

However, there is another point of view that China’s national interests are currently more in line with the US. Russia is traditionally recognized as the most aggressive state in the world. In the past, Russia has annexed Chinese territory three times the size of France, seven times the size of England and fifteen times the size of Jiangsu province. In recent decades, Russia has experienced a rapid rise in its overall national strength. “Putin the Great” has flexed his “Russian muscle” in order to show the world Russia’s power. In historical disputes with bordering nations, Russia has repeatedly taken a tough stance and put forth that, “there is no negotiation in a territorial conflict.”

The US, as the world’s only superpower, has been playing the role of the “world policeman,” since the Second World War. However, while the nation often sends troops abroad, it does not annex other countries. The US has never annexed Chinese land and also supported China in the Sino-Japanese War with money, supplies and human resources: on the Tuofeng air route alone, the US sacrificed 468 airplanes and almost three thousand pilots.

The so-called containment strategy and outflanking of China by the US, and the US’s policy towards Taiwan are a result of the large and established democracy’s natural wariness and instincts and are not necessarily aimed at China itself. The US’s so-called interference in Tibet and human rights stem from the democratic nation’s system of values, and is directed against the government but not meant to make an enemy out of China.

Side with neither?

Some advocates for siding with America have pointed out that the Chinese government has already signed a joint agreement with the Ukrainian government and has made a commitment to “firm bilateral support for issues concerning national sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity.” Ukraine has been dismembered by Russia in its political crisis and urgently needs China to bring justice and give support. Siding with Russia puts the Chinese government in an embarrassing position in which China goes against its own rights and interests. In China, the Taiwanese independence movement and the separatist movement in Xinjiang are both growing more critical every day. If China supports Russia it hurts its own interests in the process. If someone holds a “referendum” in Taiwan or Xinjiang how will China be able to seek the moral support of the world?

There is a third-party opinion in this dispute; the idea that foreign strategy is more important than ideology and should be based on pragmatism. The current Russian-US conflict is beneficial for China and China should not side with either party. Rather than pick a side, China should benefit from both sides and watch from the sidelines while the two fight it out and then reap the rewards. This is certainly in line with China’s national interests.

A country neither has permanent friends nor enemies, only permanent interests.” Winston Churchill has told us everything, I think it applies to all gamings. Side with Russia ? Side with USA ? Interests defines the result. The only question is, how would the Chinese strategists consider to make the far from easy decision ? All centers around how to define the so called "interests". Agree ?

China should not be drawn into this. Rusia did very bad anyway. Because this is not the 19th century, where we can just grab lands from an indipendent state, and go freely.

No matter which side is taken and what kind of conflict arise, it is much more important that nobody gets hurt and nobody starts a war... Just be smart and don't distroy what we all have now - peace, freedom and happiness.

U guys shouldn't forget Crimea and Ukraine were former USSR territories , the west is just against Russia because Russia blocked the deal with Ukraine that would've benefited the EU in favor of Russia . Moreover a referendum took place , it was normal that Crimea voted to join Russia since natives Russians outnumbered Ukrainians there. The EU is just a toothless dog always behind the US as a lost fool, if it was the US carrying out such operation only Russia and china will be against yet they gonna go on to attack without the approval of the United Nations. Anyway if Russia is attacked by the US and its allies it's gonna be a nuclear war and China has always sided Russia due to their past communist history, don't think that gonna change now.

It is fascinating that you've neglected to mention that Russia is now a failed and retrogressing state held completely in the thrall of a megalomaniacal midget who possesses an ultra-nationalistic ideology. Vladimir Putin controls the media in Russia. The Russian constitution, like the US, allows a president two terms. Putin served his time and installed a flunky for four years before coming back when he realized how weak Brack Obama's administration is in containing the one country that needs to be contained the most. If you watch TV in Russia today, you'll see videos of Putin strutting around the forest with his man boobs laid bare for all to see. If China has to make friends with the likes of him, then it reflects poorly on China and leads people to claim that the crypto-racist views of men like Walter Duranty who believed "Asiatic" people were unworthy of freedom and need "strongmen" (Putin is officially 5,6 - but is more likely to be 5,2) to enforce conformity. Hopefully new hydraulic fracturing technologies allow countries which value decency and respect for human rights never to have to enter into trade agreements with throwbacks who want to enslave and control others for their own personal self-aggrandizement.

another translated article showing the wonderfully rigid train of thought locals have. side with Russia or side with the USA or side with neither: those are the 3 choices for China. i'm sure China's leaders are more aware of the abundance of possibilities and choices at hand, but it's really sad that locals can't really talk about politics. win, lose or tie - what's the score? is talking about world affairs like a football game the only way to get people interested?

At the end of the day, who cares. Politics is a bullshit business fabricated by the likes of the US Federal Reserve and the Bilderberg group pushing their own agendas. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilderberg_Group

Siding with either nation will bring no real benefit to China due to the nature of this specific issue. The territory has already been controlled by the Russian military and hence there can be no political or diplomatic resolution to the situation. Hence the only options available to countries opposed to the occupation or reclamation(depending on where your loyalties lie) remain in sanctions barriers to trade and other financial mechanisms. This type of stand off with either Russia or the USA would have disastrous consequences for china either way. Thus there is no option but for China to make a few official statements denouncing the unlawful occupation of said disputed territories and urge all involved to reach a speedy violence free resolution to the conflict...Effectively dancing on the fence let alone sitting.

They will side with Russia. The Chinese get a lot of ther oil, gas, natural resources, and the like from Russia. Not to mention foodstuffs like wheat and corn. Together, the Chinese and Russians can be a bulwark against the U.S.A. and Western Europe. If you go to site for Zerohedge China has already demanded Ukrain pay a 3 billion dollar loan. If China backs Russia on Crimea, I think Russia will back China with regards to some island that starts with a "T" in the Pacific.

I was surprised to really look at the stats on Russia...they really aren't as formidable as I think people give them credit for. I guess I still kinda had that scary USSR image in my head. They got 140 million people, 750K military personnel (spread over huge area), bunch of generally outdated equipment and a $2 trillion economy. It's not 1975, they can't just steamroll Western Europe. If you look at UK, France, Germany (sorry Italy, you don't count) you get 160 million people, 600K military, more modern equipment and $8.5 trillion of GDP. Western Europe could probably turn back Russia on it's own fairly readily. Throw the US into the mix and it becomes insanely one-sided. Unless they want to fight a nuclear war.

They should side with Russia publicly, because its to their advantage, especially where the south China sea is concerned, to try to undermine the image of the US as being capable of shaping foreign policy on a whim. It makes the case to potential US allies that the US isn't going to try to hard to contain a regional rival. Privately, they should be a little concerned about Russia's expanding sphere of influence as the same thing that is happening in the Ukraine today could just as easily happen in one of the former soviet republics in central asia. China's energy needs being what they are, I imagine that thats something they would be uncomfortable with.

The answer is simple. The US and Russia will always be at loggerheads with each other, even when they were allies during WW2. Immediately after WW2, they became hostile again with the erecting of the Berlin Wall. China should not be drawn into the fiasco by taking sides. There aren't benefits in that. If China were to annex Taiwan, only the US will oppose because Taiwan is and has been part of China all this while. You can look at it's historical position until you turn blue and it will still be part of China. It's a matter of time before Taiwan reunites with China, probably under similar conditions as that of Hong Kong. Don't forget Taiwan exists due to civil war. For Xinjiang, it's already part of China, so what annexation are we talking about. It's an autonomous region but still part of China. The same goes to Tibet. Therefore, Taiwan, Xinjiang and Tibet are poor examples to use if any comparison is to be made with the Crimea issue.
