China's 20 Oldest Universities

These 20 universities were all established over a hundred years ago, and have undergone decades of transformations and name changes, ultimately becoming great alma maters for generations of Chinese scholars.

Peking University 北京大学

1)  Peking University 北京大学
Peking University was first established in 1898, under the name Imperial Capital University, and was the first of China's public universities. It is also the first university established in China's modern history, after the CCP took rule. It officially took the name Peking University in 1912, after the Xinhai Revolution. 2)  Tsinghua University清华大学

2)  Tsinghua University 清华大学
Tsinghua University was known as Tsinghua College in 1911, and was established as a preparatory school for students heading abroad to study in the US – a project funded by the imperial government of the Qing Dynasty. In 1912, it was renamed Tsinghua School and started to educate students for domestic opportunities. In 1925, the school established college curriculum and graduate programs, and officially changed its name to Tsing Hua University in 1928. (website: http://www.tsinghua.edu.cn/eng/index.jsp )

Fudan University 复旦大学

3)  Fudan University 复旦大学
Fudan University was established in 1905, under the name Fudan Public School, and accepted its first enrollments in the fall of 1905. It is the first privately funded school in China. Fu Dan are two Chinese characters that were chosen by the famous educator Father Ma Xiangbo from classic Chinese literature – signifying perseverance and self-sufficiency, stressing the ideal that the school was to educate a new generation of self-sustaining leaders to lead China out of its puppet role under the foreign rule and influence.
