No one you know will miraculously find it, find your nude pics and blackmail you, right?

Many people have photos of a more…private nature, stashed away in their smartphones. But what happens when their phone is lost? It becomes something of a ticking time bomb for the phone’s owner. 

35 year old Li Chong (all names have been changed) was arrested in Chengdu’s Jinjiang District for extortion after he found nudes of a female boss on her lost phone. He demanded 30,000 Yuan from his boss in exchange for the return of the photos. He was convicted by the district court and sentenced to eight months in prison.

That’s My Friend’s Boss!
The female boss lost her phone in a taxi while traveling to Chengdu from her hometown on February 7. The taxi driver found the lost phone in his cab. The driver found the nude photos in the phone, and sold it to Zhou Xiong. Looking at the background of some of the photos, Zhou Xiong realized that the woman in question worked at the same company as his friend Li Chong.

Zhou Xiong showed Li Chong the nude photos online. Li Chong asked excitedly, “Are there nude videos?” In fact there were. The two men went through the phone further and found a homemade pornographic video starring the female boss and another man. “Sell this phone to me! I can use it to get a big favor at work. Maybe I can get transferred to the office in Chengdu!”
Li Chong quickly traveled to Chengdu and paid his friend 2,000 Yuan for the phone.

Li Chong later confessed that he never really planned to use the photos to get a transfer back to Chengdu, or any kind of favor. He said that he knew that if he showed the photos, he may even get fired. He then decided to use the photos at blackmail material.

30,000 Yuan Ransom  
Five days after the female boss lost her phone, she received a QQ message from a user named “Shafeng,” asking for 50,000 Yuan. She had no idea that “Shafeng,” was actually her subordinate at work.

The woman bargained the price down to 30,000 Yuan. “I’ll send you 20,000 Yuan and then I will transfer the remaining 10,000 Yuan when you return the phone,” she said. Li Chong agreed and gave his bankcard number for the transfer.

Where’s the Other 10,000?
One hour after receiving the first transfer, Li Chong wrapped the phone in a newspaper and put it in a plastic bag, and dropped it off at the agreed upon location: a hotel downtown. Li dropped off the package at the front desk and said that someone would be along to pick it up.

After dropping off the phone, Li repeatedly messaged the woman to send him the second payment of 10,000 Yuan like she had promised. Instead, she reported him to the police.

On March 30, Li was tried and sentenced to eight months in prison for extortion.
