Beijing Man Awarded 3,000 Yuan for Falsely Accusing Foreigner of Terrorist Activity
Mar 01, 2016 By eChinacities.com

A Beijing man reported a foreigner who he believed was acting suspiciously to the city’s Office of Counter-Terrorism last week. The man had had a conversation with the foreigner, felt that something was off, and called the police.

Police investigated the situation and ruled out the foreigner as a terrorist suspect. However, the Beijing man was given 3,000 Yuan in cash as a reward for reporting him.

The 3,000 Yuan was issued in accordance with the People’s Republic of China Anti-Terrorism Act which gives incentive to those who report suspicious activity.

They should give cash incentives for reporting laowais who do drugs. We don't need this chit in China.

Maybe the laowais are just trying to emulate Chinese celebrities? Although medicinal marijuana has been in China for over 10,000 years - hard to blame that on us laowais.

Sensible policies for a modern, open China.

The-Final-Say

Back in 2012, a British man got a severe beat down for "attempted rape" of a Chinese girl in front of a Beijing subway entrance. Afterwards, that idiot reporter on CCTV international wrote in his Weibo blog about Sweeping Out the Foreign Trash. Chinese went nuts over this and then visa policies changed negatively. Yesterday I read a similar article about a Chinese guy who jumped on the back of a woman, on a scooter in Beijing, and started molesting her in front of full view of people walking past, holding umbrellas, and the street camera. Nobody did a single thing. Even when a couple of guys walked past and he fell off the bike, giving her a chance to escape and tell the police, he walked away like nothing happened, satisfied that he had copped a feel on a random woman. Were this a foreigner in Beijing, he might be dead, for sure arrested, fined, and deported, and probably we all would be in danger and presented with another round of passport checks and visa restrictions. The best way to stop this is to petition our own governments in our countries to do as Chinese do, tick for tack, and start checking Chinese at home and rewarding our own for false alarms. I hope that expat in this article has the means to seek legal representation and sues the crap out of someone, highly unlikely though. These people, are playing the Opium Wars Chip On Their Shoulder revenge card way too much. Good article, although it brings bad news it lets those in China be smarter as to how much murder the locals get away with. By the way, that 3000RMB was probably paid for by the wrongfully accused expat in this article. As much as I despise terrorists, I despise cheats and liars equally the same.

That British POS got what he deserved. That scooter story is made up by you. It never happened, you're just talking chit.

Yes maybe the British Pos got as he deserved but I didn't make this up. Anyone can do a Yahoo search of these words: Woman molested in Beijing, Nobody helps her. There is a video and screen grabs. If you have wechat, it was shown on Chinawire, the official service for expats to get news in China. Also, because you are too quick to spout off to make accusations and not do your homework, thenanfang.com/373791-2/ has the full report.

There is no "tit for tat", at least with the US and EU, both on a individual visa and on a business/commerce level. For the US in particular, it's been an "open border" policy (surprise) for the last 4-5 years. As far as the incident you mentioned, no one who's been in China over a year would be surprised. The only one who would interfere would be a foreigner, who then of course will have to pay for all the past, present and future medical bills of the migrant worker (and his family).

can I report a Chinese person if they are acting suspiciously?

You're going to report 1.3 billion of them?

Sure why not? The Chinese person will get 3,000 RMB for you falsely accusing him of something. You'll probably wind up in the pokey with Bubs.

Unfortunately the article gives no details. And all countries have isolated terrorist incidents. No need to jump to any conclusions here.

Thank god I left China, for all you still living there... this is a serious sign that others will try to do the same... regardless if you "look or act suspicious". If this guy got away with it and it made national news... fully expect lots of others to try the same and cash in without consequence. Ridiculously stupid!

This foreigner does not want me taking his photo without permission, I'll report him to the police then.

Seriously? Now thanks to those incompetent cops there is going to be random reports of Foreign terrorists all the time. One more good reason not to interact with the local Chinese AT ALL.
