Another Bizarre Building Spotted on Rooftop of Shenzhen Luxury Condo

As demolition begins on the illegal mountain villa in Beijing, another bizarre rooftop structure has come under fire this week: this time it’s a rooftop temple on a multi-million luxury condo in Shenzhen’s Nanshan District.

The rooftop building, which is located in “Meijia Plaza” – prime real estate close to Window of the World and Happy Valley – is also suspected of being an illegal construction. From the photos that have emerged online, one can see the roof of what looks like a typical temple. Neighbors have allegedly claimed that the owner regularly performs rituals in there such as burning incense. Occasionally, he also burns paper in honor of the dead, the smoke of which often drifts into neighbors’ homes. Neighbors have also said that they don’t whether he uses it as a shrine to worship ancestors of whether he’s Buddhist, but one neighbor did comment that dust constantly gets blown into their homes but that none have gone up there because it’s a private residence. The neighbor also claimed that the building has been on the rooftop for many years.

A nearby real estate agent has said that only rich people can afford to live at the “Meijia Plaza”; regular condos cost 30,000 RMB per square meter there while penthouses cost over 15 million RMB.

According to the person who reported the illegal structure, the owner of the temple is well known in Shenzhen and it was previously impossible to investigate him. Even the media didn’t dare report about the illegal building, until now.

So far there has been no success in contacting the owner, despite journalists’ attempts at ringing the doorbell. However, the leader of the local Shahe Street Enforcement Team Liu Minxing has pledged to continue investigating the case and to deal with the situation harshly if the temple is found to be illegal.
