On the morning of March 19, a 20 year old man walked into the Department of Gastroenterology of the People’s Liberation Army Hospital Number 113, vomiting, shaking, and sweating profusely. Staff surely could not have been prepared for his explanation.

The young man works at a restaurant and that morning it had been a particularly quiet workday, with little to no customers. The kitchen and service staff were chatting and laughing, when one man said he would pay one month’s rent to someone who would swallow a lighter. One young man, who had two days before seen his salary spent on clothes by his girlfriend, saw this as an opportunity to  make back some hard earned cash.

He promptly swallowed the lighter whole, but shortly after the terrible symptoms began. After trying a variety of methods, the doctor finally managed to get the offending object out of his stomach. The young man lied about his name to get out of paying, and quickly disappeared out of the hospital, untraceable. So at least he didn’t do it all for nothing, just for one month’s rent.
