With a variety of white and wheat breads and an assortment of buns which can be eaten plain or stuffed with meat and veggies, the Dutch chef really goes all out to bring a wonderful European mix of favorites from German breads, to Danish pastries in a few flavors, Dutch-style apple pie, fruit cake and a moist butter cake that is perfectly complemented with a cup of coffee. They even managed to sneak a few extra special European treats on the menu: bitterballs, sausage rolls and croquettes.

Serving a variety of traditional freshly baked goods from home, Germans frequent this place for that familiar taste. The daily bread selection consists of over 40 varieties, not to mention the assortment of German and European-style cakes and Danish pastries. While the coffee they serve is not from Germany, the main ingredients used in the baked goods are most certainly imported directly from the source. If you have a hankering for more than baked goods, this bakery has a wonderful restaurant upstairs featuring traditional German cuisine.

For all of you American pie lovers in Beijing, the Pie House has you in mind with their absolutely, mouth-watering deserts. Not being able to find those favorite and familiar flavors from home is a frustration most foreigners face when moving to a new country; hence the reason the Pie House was created. At only 5-6 RMB each, you can afford this delicious treat often. Of course, whether it’s to stay or on the go, these muffins make the perfect breakfast with a hot cup of their imported coffee. However, that isn’t all they do, Sequoia also turns out some fantastic breads and pastries made right in the store. Though the selection is small, it is well worth the trip and in addition they serve sandwiches, using their own bread, and pastas, so you can always make a lunch date of the journey.

By no means does this list contain the only delicious foreign bakeries in Beijing but it is a fantastic beginning in your search for those familiar baked goods. There are a few more, however that shouldn’t go without mentioning: The Lollipop Bakery which is a fabulous online cupcake shop owned by a native London lady, CupofChina on Financial Street in the Xicheng District is another great stop for breads, pastries and original New York cheesecake and lastly, Sweet Spot Restaurant and Bakery which is a bit off the beaten path, just Southwest of Wudaokou station, but home to some wonderful fresh baked breads and pastries at a fraction of the price compared to most others.
