Shanghai’s 10 Best Outdoor Restaurants

Shanghai’s 10 Best Outdoor Restaurants
By Andrea Scarlatelli , eChinacities.com

Everyone is clamouring to get outside these days, what with the summer heat about to launch into "unbearable" mode. Luckily, there are a lot of great outdoor options when you're in the mood to dine al fresco. Read on for some of the best.

1) GogaView In Map
Tucked alongside bigger venues on Yueyang Lu, Goga might not look like much from the outside but the food is flat out fantastic. A bit pricy, but fantastic. Now that the rooftop is open for business, seating has expanded a bit from its twenty-seat maximum inside. Expect California/Asian fusion food, friendly service, and a nice view in a bustling part of town.

Add: 1 Yueyang Lu, Shanghai (near Dongping Lu)
地址: 上海岳阳路1号, 近东平路
Tel: 021 6431 9700
Open: Daily, 17:30-22:30

2) Shanghai BreweryView In Map
While both Shanghai Brewery locations have outdoor seating, the new one on Hengshan Lu is the winner, hands down. Situated directly on the corner for maximum patio space and people watching potential, happy hour has become quite the spectacle here. Oh yeah, and 28 RMB beers don't hurt either.

Add: 15 Dongping Lu, Shanghai (near Hengshan Lu)
地址:上海东平路15号, 近衡山路
Tel: 021 3461-0717
Opening hours: Daily, 10:00-2:00

3) Lost HeavenView In Map
Specialising in Yunnan cuisine, Lost Heaven is one of the best Bund- view restaurants. Their attention to detail when it comes to both food and décor make visiting a pleasure, although the rather steep price tag makes it a slightly guilty one. It's all worth it, though, when lounging on the outdoor terrace.

Add: 17 Yan'an Dong Lu, Shanghai (near Sichuan Nan Lu)
地址:上海延安东路17号,近四川南路
Tel: 021 6330 0967
Opening hours: Daily, 12:00-14:00 & 17:30-22:30; Lounge, 18:00-2:00

4) BarbarossaView In Map
One of the most well established restaurants in Shanghai, its location in the middle of People's Park (on a lake, no less) makes it rather hard to miss. Which is fortunate, because sitting outside here brings a tranquillity that can be hard to find in the middle of the city.

Add: People's Park, 231 Nanjing Xi Lu, Shanghai (near Huangpi Nan Lu)
地址:上海南京西路231号,人民公园内近黄陂南路
Tel: 021 6318 0220
Opening hours: Daily, 11:00-late

5) glo LondonView In Map
Located on the corner of the rapidly deteriorating Dongping Lu, glo London nevertheless stands out from its surroundings with help from its lounge-like rooftop patio. It is opened exclusively for their BBQ offerings, which happen every day except Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. In other words, this is an end of the week party destination.

Add: 1 Wulumuqi Lu, Shanghai (near Dongping Lu)
地址:上海乌鲁木齐路1号, 近东平路
Tel: 021 6466 6565
Opening hours: 4th Floor (rooftop): Thurs-Sun, 11:00-2:00

6) XiboView In Map
Whether you think Xibo is authentic Xinjiang food or not, its popularity certainly attests to the fact that the food is good, regardless of what it's supposed to be. Also good? Its gorgeous rooftop seating area that lets you enjoy the relative quiet of Changshu Lu.

Add: 3/F, 83 Changshu Lu, Shanghai (near Julu Lu)
地址:上海常熟路83号3楼, 近巨鹿路
Tel: 021 5403 8330
Opening hours: Daily, 11:00-24:00

7) Gourmet CaféView In Map
Known mostly for their Monday buy-one-get-one-free burger deals, Gourmet Café also happens to have a spacious patio area with a surprisingly good view of the Jing'An area. And if they're full, you can always go next door to Pizza Marzano, which shares the same stretch of outdoor seating.

Add: 1/F, Shanghai Centre, 1376 Nanjing Xi Lu, Shanghai (near Xikang Lu)
地址:上海南京西路1376号, 上海商城1楼, 近西康路
Tel: 021 6289 5733
Opening hours: Mon-Fri, 7:30-24:00; Sat-Sun, 8:00am-24:00

8) KABBView In Map
It's a fact: most restaurants in Xintiandi are a complete waste of time (and money). KABB, however, does a good job of offering Western favourites (French toast, anyone?) at decent prices. Their patio is extremely popular with the expat crowd, however, so reservations for outside seating is a must.

Add: Xintiandi, North Block, Lane 181 Taicang Lu, Shanghai (near Madang Lu)
地址:上海太仓路181号, 新天地北里, 近马当路
Tel: 021 3307 0798
Opening hours: Sun-Thurs, 7:00-1:00; Fri-Sat, 7:00-2:00

9) Abbey RoadView In Map
Another popular expat hangout, Abbey Road has a quaint feel to it, despite its somewhat mammoth indoor layout. The patio is often covered by a giant tent, which helps separate patrons from the drunken crowds stumbling out of The Beaver across the street.

Add: 45 Yueyang Lu, Shanghai (near Dongping Lu)
地址:上海岳阳路45号, 东平路口
Tel: 021 6431 6787
Opening hours: Mon-Fri, 16:00-late; Sat-Sun 8:30-late

10) Sasha'sView In Map
Sasha's has one of the most famous patios in the city, and for good reason. It's large, filled with greenery, and secluded enough from the main road that you can almost pretend you're not right smack in the middle of Hengshan Lu.

Add: 11 Dongping Lu, Shanghai (near Hengshan Lu)
地址:上海东平路11号, 近衡山路
Tel: 021 6474 6628
Opening hours: Bar, Sun-Thurs, 11:00-1:00 & Fri-Sat, 11:00-2:00; Restaurant, Daily, 11:00-22:30
