It’s hardly breaking news that decent bread can be hard to find in Shanghai. Local chain bakeries churn out sickly-sweet loaves, and even imported goods aisles in big supermarkets offer little but rock-hard baguettes. The good news is that there are several excellent bakeries around town where you can stock up on your rye, sourdough, seeded and simple white.

1) Baker & Spice
This relative newcomer to the scene has quickly cemented its reputation as the top dog of Shanghai bakeries. Go to the Anfu Lu branch on weekends and there’s a chance you might not be able to squeeze through the door thanks to the crowds. If you want even half a chance of snagging a seat at the wooden table, make sure you get there early. Luckily, a second branch has just opened inside the Shanghai Centre to help relieve the situation. Aside from an array of delicious loaves, including flaxseed, Danish and rye (30 RMB each), there’s a selection of gorgeous pastries, cakes and muffins, along with sandwiches to take out or eat in. Baker & Spice provides bread and cakes to Wagas, so you might recognize some of the flavours if you’re a café regular.

2) Maison de Manne et Sante
Pretty Shaoxing Lu is famous for its charming cafés, but it’s also home to Maison de Manne et Sante, a great little bakery that’s part of a larger enterprise serving coffee and full meals. The branch on Xinzha Lu is an individual bakery with chairs and tables outside for warm weather. On display is a veritable cornucopia of soft baguettes, pastries, loaves and donuts.

3) Bastiaan BakeryView In Map
Shanghai’s oldest Western-style bakery opened up on Hongmei Pedestrian Street back in 2000 and has been a staple on the scene ever since, providing a wide array of bread, patisserie items, savory baked goods and cakes. Dutch-managed but with a distinctly German feel, it’s warm interior and inviting display cases guarantee you won’t walk away empty-handed.

4) LindView In Map
For Xujiahui’s bread seekers, Lind is the answer to your prayers. Located in the basement of a shopping mall, it’s better for take-out than dine-in. It’s also not the cheapest shop on the block, but worth a few extra yuan for the quality. Lind’s bread list is heavy on rye, and includes an ultra-seedy eight-grain rye loaf for 32 RMB. Sweet treats like Black Forest Cake and Triple Chocolate Cake go for between 35 and 38 RMB per slice. Since it’s a German brand with a 100-year pedigree, it’s no surprise that pretzels are also featured on the menu.

5) Haya’sView In Map
Known as a Mediterranean restaurant (and a good one, at that), Haya’s also moonlights as a bakery. Check out their bread selection next time you’re there, or drop by just for that purpose – it’s worth it. From flatbreads to Western loaves, they have a surprisingly comprehensive array, and prices are reasonable.

6) House of FlourView In Map
5-star pastry chef Brian Tan’s stronghold out at Zhangjiang Hi-Tech Park might not be on everyone’s way home, but for workers at the gao ke, House of Flour is a gift that keeps on giving. It’s well known for its light lunch options, but also celebrated for its excellent bread. Favourites include the sourdough round loaf (30 RMB) and the low-carb multigrain (30 RMB).

7) Mata-MataView In Map
What’s great about Mata-Mata is that it offers free delivery within two kilometres for orders of 30 RMB or above. Hidden among the fruit and seafood shops on Wulumuqi Lu, it’s a cheaper and simpler alternative to Baker & Spice.
