New Shopping Dreamland: Shanghai's 889 Plaza Shopping Mall

The area of north Jing’an District around Wanhangdu Lu and Changshou Lu is having something of a renaissance lately. There’s a new Swiss restaurant on Kangding Lu next door to a bakery and an imported food shop, and Imago Plaza is soon to open just after Wuning Bridge in south Putuo District. But the jewel in the crown of the new developments is 889 Plaza, which opened on 28th January at 889 Wanhangdu Lu.

The complex is made up of an office tower which fronts Changshou Lu, and a six story shopping mall behind it. The mall entrance is a huge atrium covered by a glass-panelled ceiling, allowing a view of all six floors. Not all the units are occupied yet, but there’s already plenty of shops, cafés and restaurants open.

On the ground floor is a Häagen-Dazs ice cream parlour which is already proving popular with sweet-toothed visitors. It is situated in the bottom story of a cylindrical glass tower which runs up all six floors. At the top of this tower is an outdoor seating area for customers of the charmingly-named I Am Eating food court. The mall has plenty of choices for eating. As well as Häagen-Dazs there’s also an Andersen’s Dairy ice cream café in the basement, and a branch of Korean chain Pankoo on level three. Most of the fifth floor is taken up with eateries; there’s a sushi bar, a Hong Kong canteen, and an Ajisen ramen restaurant.

The third and fourth floors contain a variety of clothing shops, from local brands Bread and Butter, to international names like Next, Nike, Benetton and Crocs. The shops are laid out around a central atrium containing the escalators, so you get to see all the floors from wherever you are.

One of the big draws is the branch of Sephora, which is located right at the entrance. This popular makeup emporium already has branches on Huaihai Lu, and is a perennial favourite. Another draw is Mannings, the Hong Kong pharmacy chain that has recently landed in Shanghai. Plaza 889’s branch is in the basement, along with home interiors shop Hola, and a well-stocked pet shop. They sell kittens, ferrets, rabbits, and hamsters at the moment (along with care items, food, and other accoutrements), and have a grooming salon for dogs at the back of the store.

Still to open is a branch of Japanese lifestyle store MUJI (which is going to be huge) and a Costa Coffee which looks like it will have a terrace – perfect for iced lattes and people watching when the warmer months come around!

While it may not rival nearby Cloud Nine shopping mall for size, Plaza 889 is a great addition to the formerly nondescript Wanhangdu/Changshou crossroads, offering a fresh selection of new shops and restaurants. It’s definitely worth a look.
