Greek Restaurants in Shanghai

Greek Restaurants in Shanghai
By Susie Gordon , eChinacities.com

Juicy gyro kebabs, tasty tzatziki, spanakopita and souvlaki… Greek food is famous around the world for its Mediterranean flavours and unique spices. Ouzo and retsina are popular international drinks, and most cities have Greek eateries. Unfortunately, Greek isn’t the most strongly represented cuisines in Shanghai, but luckily there are just enough good restaurants to mean that you never have to go without Hellenic delicacies.

Here is our pick of the best in town:

1) The Fat Olive 欧立威View In Map

Part wine bar, part mezze joint, The Fat Olive is the brainchild of Australian-Greek chef and restaurateur, David Laris. It opened last summer, just in time for the great weather, and became an instant hit thanks to its huge terrace filled with white sofas. Sip wines from around the world while you snack on Greek appetizers (including lamb pita warps, stuffed vine leaves, and hummous) and enjoy the view over Luwan to Pudong

2) Elia艾利娅View In Map

One for the Pudong-ites, Elia serves modern Greek food with a gourmet twist. The restaurant has a modern feel – all simple red seats, straight lines, and quirky light fittings. It’s more cosy minimalist than homestyle taverna, but the Mediterranean flavours and spices are spot-on traditional.

3) 1228View In Map
You enter 1228 through a white Doric column and arch, but that’s as far as the Hellenic clichés go. Once inside, you’re treated to a fresh, modern interior with huge windows looking out onto the leafy street, and classic Mediterranean food. They’re particularly good at tzatziki and yoghurt, and there’s Italian fare on the menu if you want to mix and match.

4) Mythos米索斯View In Map

The Cool Docks don’t often make it onto the Shanghai radar, but it’s definitely worth a trip, especially for a meal at Mythos. The roof terrace is great for the warmer seasons, with views of the Bund and Lujiazui. Inside, the décor is comfortingly Aegean – whitewash, blue tiles, and even a mural of a Santorini windmill. The food is beautifully presented and includes all the classics like Greek salad, moussaka, and kebabs.

5) Greek Taverna

With two branches in Shanghai, Greek Taverna’s simple name tells you all you need to know. It’s a down to earth, blue-and-white painted homage to good, homestyle Greek food. Their appetizer plate is particularly good, with plenty of hummous, olives, aubergine dip, and pitta bread. Another plus is ouzo served by the bottle.
