Electric Avenue: Shanghai's Electronic Markets

A trip to the market in Shanghai is a colourful experience to say the least. It’s not for the faint-hearted, as buyers and sellers play tactical games with one another in attempt to get exactly want they want. As in all games, someone has be the winner, so if you know what you want and you know how to get it, shopping at markets is there for your enjoyment and for your gains.

Shanghai’s electronic markets will impress everyone from nerds to total tech trainees. With all of the gadgets and gizmos on offer, you’ll be buzzing from here to the World Wide Web.

Word of warning: unfortunately, electronics in China aren’t as cheap as those in neighbouring Hong Kong and Singapore. Import taxes make Shanghai electronics expensive, but don’t worry – these prices are rarely as high as those you may be quoted in your home country.

Here are two electronics markets we’ve checked out:

1) CyberMart 赛博数码广场
CyberMart is the biggest and most impressive of the city’s electronic markets. It receives extra points for its clean floors and genuine concessions stands. From Mac to Canon Cameras, it has all the high-end retail brands that you know, and the products that you are familiar with.

As you ascend through the markets three levels, the neat stalls and their uniformed employees are fast replaced with eager punters who flog stolen and ripped off products. One can only assume that the higher the floor the cheaper the rent!

Don’t miss: Shop 308
This shop’s cute, quirky, twenty-something owner Leo is nicknamed the Phone King. He knows everything there is to know about phones, and has all the models you need: iPhones, BlackBerrys, Nokias and more. Head up to level three, find shop 308 and ask for Leo.

2) Modern Electronic City 现代电子城
A far cry from friendly faces and squeaky-clean floors, Fuxing Modern Electronic City offers little more than a smirk and trodden cigarettes on worn floors. This charming mess hoards all things electronic from cables to amps, and remote controlled toys for the big kids.

Prices are ridiculously low. Unsurprisingly, this goes hand in hand with products that are not necessarily top quality. Enter with an open mind and, assuming you don’t have a problem with rip-off merchandise, this will be your techno heaven. You’ll be back again and again to replace worn out helicopter or leads, batteries and all of those bits and pieces.

Little boys and big boys alike will be attracted to the toy shop to the left of the elevator on level two. The store has a great selection of remote controlled cars and helicopters that will delight and entertain. A small remote controlled helicopter will set you back 129 RMB.

So be prepared to bargain, and you’ll leave with a smile on your face and some top-notch gadgets in your hands.
