A Taste for the Exotic: 4 Creative Markets in Shanghai

Living in Shanghai, we usually find ourselves going to the usual fake markets to buy on the cheap. Unknown to many foreigners, however, are the markets around the city that cater to more than our love for fashion and gadgets. For the more creatively inclined, Shanghai provides several awesome market options.

1) Painter's StreetView In Map
Everyone can appreciate a good painting hanging on a wall. For many of us who value a house with gorgeous art, owning an original Rembrandt, Van Gogh or Warhol is something that will only ever happen in an alternative universe. Luckily for us, this particular corner of Shanghai is dedicated to housing artists who paint the most amazing replicas of classic art, photographs or even original works. There is nothing too simple or too bizarre for these talented artists; size is not an obstacle, as long as you can put your money where your eyes are.

2) Dada Night MarketView In Map
Popular bar Dada transforms into a market of sorts once a month, hosting Shanghai's creatives as they set up pop-up shops in the bar. The vibe is pretty laid back, the drinks are not expensive and the beats are always dope – as one would expect from Dada. It's a great chance to meet like-minded people while nibbling on homemade foods and checking out (and buying!) locally designed wares and threads from some of Shanghai's best..

This six-story photographer's heaven caters to every photographic whim and need, and it's a perfect spot for both beginners and pros. Here, one can easily find camera equipment and accessories such as tripods, lenses, and lighting equipment. Certain stores even offer laser printing and laminating services! In addition to brand new name brand cameras there are many shops that specialize in secondhand cameras and equipment, repairs and photography books. It's easiest to bargain on the secondhand goods rather than the brand new ones, although the latter is not unheard of.

More exotic instruments, such as djembe drums, can also be found here. Various store owners even offer lessons, with the price probably negotiable if you buy instruments from them.
