Good coffee is hard to find no matter where you live in the world. And with coffee culture in China still being in its infant stage, finding a satisfactory brew in a city like Nanchang can be all the more difficult. Despite the challenges, we combed the city’s barista scene in an attempt to find a good spot for sipping on coffee.

1) Starbucks (Department store complex)
Open since August 2012, the Starbucks located in the department store complex (百货大楼店) as well as other locations across the city have been well received by the locals. As well as a general relaxing coffee atmosphere, the branch features a porcelain vase made in nearby town Jingdezhen behind the bar. This provides a great east-meets-west environment, which does a good job in attracting a lot of customers, though they may just be there for the coffee and people-watching.

2) Kalunbi Coffee (Hengmao Branch)View In Map
Arriving in Nanchang in 2006, Kalunbi Coffee (卡伦比咖啡) now has many branches across the city. Although the coffee is Italian style, you can also indulge in Chinese and Western food, with the ice cream being a particular favorite among customers. Kalunbi is also renowned for its fast internet service, but don’t expect the same speed from the service! It gets busy on weekends, and is reportedly a hot dating spot for young couples.

3) Dio Coffee
There are many branches of Dio Coffee (迪欧咖啡) around Nanchang, though we recommend you pay a visit to the branch idyllically situated near the Bayi Park (八一公园) and East Lake (东湖). You can sit back, relax and watch the world go by outside your window with a good cup (albeit slightly expensive) coffee. The menu offers an international blend of cuisine, with the spaghetti dish being one of the bestsellers. It gets pretty busy on the weekends, so try to avoid the rush to fully appreciate this café.

Happy Sun Coffee (晴悦咖啡) seems to live up to its nature-inspired name, as inside it’s not only quiet, but it also makes you feel as if you’ve been transported away from the hectic city life altogether. With food and coffee options galore, visitors should also try the longan red date tea for a refreshing boost, which can also be refilled for free by the friendly waiters on hand.;
